All and any ancient objects that are dug up of found by using a metal detector, belongs to the government, just as in many other countries who has a history that goes back a cpl of 1000's yrs. On that particular island, it is actually illegal to use a metal detector. It would probably just run out of batteries too fast. The whole island is littered with stuff from way back to around 250-400 AD, as well as the viking era....and so on.

Did they have the AD after the date?
I still wonder why no coins have BC before the date.

Although the article didn't say it. I wonder if the landowner has any right to the find under the local laws. If the landowner does have a right in any event I hope that he has a claim and it is upheld.

Those coins sure would look nice on our thread. 1130 imagine. How nice would it be to own a bit of that?

So awesome....I love when that happens. It seems every year we hear of a few and there's probably more that we don't hear about since greedy governments like to "confiscate" the treasures people find....kind of like the US taxman. LOL

Would all depend on the local laws. I know in the US some places have land rights and mineral rights such as North Dakota where you own the land but someone else can own anything found under it like oil or natural gas.

Since digging with the intention of finding artifacts are illegal on that island, all accidental finds are claimed by the government. The finder will get a certain % of the find's value, but the actual coins will eventually end up in different museums, all depending on what kind of artifacts that were found
