Hey there,

I posted this topic in the Unidentified Coins section, however I didn't get much of a response, so i'll try here.

I've had it suggested that this may not be a coin, but some sort of modern concoction (possibly a medal, ceremonial piece, etc.)

I would be shocked if this is not a coin however, seeing as it resembles Yunnan Province coins, and other China Province's coins so distinctly.

The style of 4 symbols in the center, bordered, then surrounded by more symbols along the edge is consistant to China Province coins from the early 1900's. However, this coin does appear to be in rather (and suspiciously) good shape.

Any suggestions?

I agree 100% with the "This is not a coin but some sort of fantasy piece."

Says it's from Shanxi province but it's definitely doesn't resemble anything that I know.

It's Chinese coins you are dealing with - lots of fakes. Best not to buy anything unless you know what you are dealing with.

The styles for the front and back are different, leading me to think it is probably not a real coin.

Hmm, strange. Maybe it's some sort of medal or something then. I doubt it's a fake coin. Because fake coins are based off real coins, so we'd still be able to find something about it.

It is a one tael coin purportedly minted in 1890 by the Furnace Bureau of Shanxi Province.

However, most Chinese collectors consider it to be a "concocted" coin which means you will not find it in Chinese coin catalogs.

The author of this article tries to make the case that the coin could be real (he's trying to sell the coin) but his viewpoint is definitely in the minority.

The article nevertheless provides some good images of the "coin".

It is a fantasy, meaning it was never a real coin. It is a product of someone's imagination.

Manymore,

Yes! Someone finally found it. This has been bugging me for a couple of days now. I was thinking, even if it was a fake, it should still be based off something real.

Thanks for much.

However, the back side seems to be a tad different. In the photos you provided, it seems to be a cauldron with fire on top. Mine seems to just be a random design however. Hmm.
