I posted this in the Vamming section. I picked another VAM from ebay for $45 in July. This one was an 1878-S VAM 111 and is one of three known. The other two are in "details" holders and mine is yet to be sent in for grading. I would hope to get an XF45 grade on it. One of those "an XF-45 details" coins sold in a private party sale for $11,000. btw Coppernickeldaddy ... super "Huge O". I've had my eye out for one of those for many years.

How do you guys pick off ebay? How can you tell what it is from the pictures?

Quote:How do you guys pick off ebay? How can you tell what it is from the pictures? A large amount of study, then trial and error. I stick with a couple of year groups (both contain lots of potential) and then learn the key features. For that 78-S VAM 111 it was two reverse features and three obverse features. When I look at 78-S Morgans on ebay my eyes do a choreographed dance over the images and the mind takes mental notes. If I match four to five I download the pictures and enlarge/enhance them to confirm. It's not for everyone and we Vammers don't divulge the key features freely ... keeps the competition down. But if you want to know they are available online to learn.

Thanks for the responses SeatedNut and trout1105. I might try to learn a few and take a shot. I am familure with VAM world, but not got into it much. Any recommendations on good VAMs to learn the futures of. Are the top 100 the key ones or are others worth an amount more then a regular coin?

I really had a bunch but this one is one of the better ones: I got a raw 1889CC Morgan for 17 dollars. I sent it to PCGS. Came back as a VF25. They do around 1200-1300 on ebay in this grade.

Last year I picked a 1982 no MM Roosevelt dime (about EX F) from a $120 worth of CWR in one go. It's the most valuable coin I am aware of cherrypicking from circulated rolls, and I am further impressed, knowing figures of their existence is only around 15K. Not bad for someone that never finds anything valuable!

Does it have to be US? Hope not cos here goes:
Mid last year I picked up some Aussie half pennies for 18c each. I pulled out a 1911 (first year of issue) in very nice condition. Got it graded by PCGS and it made MS64 RB. Probably worth $700-900 for 18c + about $80 to get it graded.
