Just recently started collecting Mercury dimes, its helped that my New Tech Job is across the street from the Pawn shop. He has a large box of Merc Dimes for 2.50 each and I pick through it nearly daily. I'm buying on a budget, its hard not to just buy all I need right then and there, so I break itup for a certain amount each day(normally about 5 bucks a day) Here is what I've gotten so: 16 17 17 S - xf40 18 d 18 s 19 d 19 s 23 s 26 d 27 D 28 s 29 s - and Extra 30 s - xf40 38 s - and extra 41 - MS 42 D - MS 43 - MS 43 D x3 in MS+ condition 44 d - MS 45 - MS And some Random Rosies in MS 47 s, 55 s and a 63 Proof(Rosies were 2.15) Edited by CGCoins 08/15/2012 5:16 pm

Of all the coins that you listed I would be pleased to see a pic of the 1919-d. Denver coins of 1919 are often overlooked. At $2.50 each, really, how badly can you do? On top of everything the search is a thrill in itself. What I used to experience going through pocket change is somehow duplicated in searching through a "bargain box" at a pawn shop. Three thumbs up! No smiley face, but I am SMILING!

haha, I'll have to get some pics when I get home, At work now. Just picked up the 16p, 17s, 18s and 28s on lunch. I'm trying to get all the teens and 20's out of the way. Seems like he just tosses the Dimes in the box, so good for me :0 The 19d is probably about a f12. Which Is going to be my minimum grade I would like. I had to jump to dimes because I went through so many LWC to make nearly 2 sets(only need the key dates for my first, and about 12 total for my 2nd.), jefferson and Buffalo nickels. Those sets are down to the tougher stuff( War Nickels in AAU condition+ and buffalos with readable dates)

Fine 12, huh? And out of a box at the pawn shop across the street? PLEASE keep doing so! TRY TRY TRY! There are only five stoppers: 16-D, 21, 21-D, 26-S and 31-S. The first three, everyone knows about these. The last two, perhaps if you get lucky. Not as well known. Are you having fun on your lunch hour? THAT is all that matters.

If it was an Hour lunch, I'd go broke! I am up there daily and he lets me know when he tosses more Dimes in the box. He does have a 21p, but 65 is a bit much for me to drop now. I figure I can get most the set pretty cheap, then set some $ aside for the Semi Keys, and MAYBE eventually come across that elusive and Legit 16d

I thought 31-D was the toughest of the 1931 dated coins?

You are correct Mycrob. The 31d is a 1.26 mintage...and the 31s is 1.8

31 D and S in low grade is easy, once you get into XF and above that's get more expensive.

I've seen 31 and 31-S at coin shows for just slightly over current melt, so those two aren't hard. It's the 31-D I've seen that be at least 2x melt or higher, based on condition.

Yeah, I'm just keeping my eye for decent ones. Where the Rim is still prevalent. After I get most my book filled(When I get a book), I'll start upgrading like I have been with my LWC and IH cents

Inspiring thread. I literally did the exact same thing to help fill my Merc folder. I got all mine at spot!

I wish I could get them at spot, so far around here 2.50 for a merc is the cheapest I've come across. Other places are wanting 3-4, closer to 4 on average

Decided to go spend about 5 more Bucks. Grabbed these 2 1926 p - f12+ or so 1931 p - vg10 Dont see those too often through the boxes, so it helps!
