There was a response posted by a fellow member concerning the relationship between a particular coins' grade population and its potential for future increases in value.

The article was very well written and documented but the question that I have pertains the availability of this information to a person who is not a member of neither NGC nor PCGS. It appears that in the case of PCGS a person has to be a member. However, is this information available elsewhere or do we have to join a TPG to get access to this information?

I guess that I am trying to my research on the cheap and looking for an easy solution.

You can check the PCGS coin facts usually at least once a day for free. The other trick is if you know what youre looking for say a 2004 PF 70 ASE just go on ebay and find a cert for one of them and then check the cert on the PCGS website and it almost always has the coin population listed. Not sure about NGCs other than it would never let me check anything not being a member

From What I have found PCGS Population reports and NGC Census
reports are for paid members only. I am a member of PCGS and would not mind doing a little reseach for you. Just PM me.

I do not have access to NGC although I have tried several times

I just tried Baseball21's trick on checking cert # it does give population numbers at NGC on last years coins but not available yet for recent coins but it does not give total submitted

The only problem with any such reports is they are basically just guess work. The amount of any coins in any grades are just based on what has gone through their organizations. And a problem with that too is how many people resend the same coins that came from a NGC slab to be graded by PCGS. I don't think any one on Earth knows exactly how many 1914D Lincoln Cents exist, all the possible grades of those and/or what they are really worth.
Any values anyone puts on a coin is completely just a guess. Which is why all price GUIDES are called GUIDES.

You will have to pay if you want direct access to the population reports but you can get some of the data by going to some of the auction houses like Teletrade and Heritage. For coins that they are selling or have sold, Teletrade has the numbers certified by both PCGS and NGC in that grade, in higher grades, and in all grades. Heritage has the same data from NGC and CAC. They used to have it from PCGS. Registering for both is free and will allow you to access the data(Heritage) or from older auctions(Teletrade).

I have been trying to divine some guesstimate of population from the values shown on Numismedia and buying at one grade below where the price dramatically jumps, thinking that by price attrition when the higher price goes up then that coin will also go up. Don't know if that truly holds up under scrutinity but it is a strategy. The thing about that in my mind is that the population vs value I don't think holds up. Then I'm back to the simpler coin versus holder system (or the joy of the game).

I think that sometimes I over analyze my positions and end up going on my feelings. That in a nutshell is why I asked the question. I really have to read more.

The suggestions made are all good and I have to settle on a TPG to join.

population figures carry some currency when determining value, but not always. the key is demand. demand can come from historical sentiments towards a series or date- or due to perceived scarcity of a coin within a grade.

The best approach to take when buying a coin is to assume at all times that you are buying it at retail. In otherwords, most of the time you will pay what the market dictates the coin is worth. There are typically no bargains with A grade material.
