Poll Question
It is designated that the "bare breast" SLQ's of 1916 and 1917 as Type I. And the chain covering, head redesign and stars added below eagle on the reverse are recognized as the Type II. The date was recessed in 1925, should this be considered the Type III? Or is this not major enough of a modification and would be overlooked by a novice collector?

Thanks in advance!

Poll Choices
Yes, Type III should be designated
No, Type III should not be designated

In order to lower the date to decrease wear on it, there was a definite design change.

IMHO there were several much more drastic design changes that never seem to get their own types (that especially refers to Petite Head large cents - 1839 to 1843 - and immediately preceding Silly and Booby heads of 1839).
Don't know much about this specific one so can't really say.

I know of 6 types of Buffalo nickels - type 1, type 2 with weak liberty, type 2 with strong liberty, type of 1920 (wavy ribbon), type of 1921 (wavy ribbon and hair detail) and type of 1924 (different wavy ribbon). There are three types of Mercury dimes, but nobody breaks those down even though the type of 1916 is quite different. Walking liberties had lots of design tweaks (the sun rays move all over the place), and several series have the mintmark moving from front to back or vice versa.

I don't know if there's a objective standard for saying what qualifies as a new type, or just a subtype.

I usually call it Type III. It is a noticeable difference in the look of the coin. I have not studied the other coins enough to have an opinion on them, unfortunately.
