Hi, I'm new to coin collecting, and I would like some help. Can anyone please explain the VAM system? I hear people talking about it, but I have no idea what it is.

What is it you're wondering about? IMO it is another type of coin collecting, you have collectors that look for toning, errors, VAM's, etc. VAM's is just a population, vocabulary, and explanation of the different varieties found in the coins it covers. Don't know if that it's what you were looking for but that it's what I have unless your looking for something exact.

A VAM is basically a catalog numbering system of each die pairing that minted each Morgan and Peace dollar. It is a numbering system that may never be complete in any of our lifetimes because there are different pairings being discovered almost daily. Then you have the few things that can happen to the dies that are significant enough to mention and give it a letter beside the original VAM (example VAM-84 and VAM-84A). It sounds really complicated and it really can take people years upon years to learn to know what VAM is what by sight. Even then I don't believe there is anyone that knows each and every VAM characteristic of each and every die pairing but there are some people that can tell you allot of the most significant ones just by looking at them. It can be very fun but can also be very frustrating at times, especially when you are going by a picture and there are two VAM's that share characteristics but one has something extra and can be worth triple what the other one is worth and you think you see that characteristic so you do everything you can to win the auction and then wait and wait and wait for it to get delivered to find out it is the other one that you have 15 more just like it in the drawer. But that is also what makes it exciting to allot of people as well so its definitely a specific niche of the hobby that takes a special breed to be able to take the ups and downs of this type of collecting

Great answer Bryan. I went to VAM world last week and read a bit but it was too overwhelming for this newbie! Your explanation covered the definition and why people would collect them.
