I find myself flip flopping with my silver buying tendentious. Recently I find myself buying more 80% Canadian Junk due to the low premium and some 90% US junk. I am just wondering if I am neglecting .999 government issued bullion. Just asking peoples buying strategies. Any input would greatly be appreciated.

For anything I would consider an investment I currently buy tubes of ASE or Leafs. I value their liquidity. Just haven't got into or totally comfortable with rounds and bars. I also collect Koalas, Kookaburas, Pandas, etc. but their premiums make it hard for me to classify them as investments.

A mix of .999, .925, .900, .800, .500 and .400....
Diverse and allows for alot of interesting and different coin designs...
Although to flip I normally buy .999

90% Mercury dimes, and Walking Liberty halves... ASE's, CML's, Mexican Onzas, and Engelhard or Matthey 1oz bars. That's for the "smalls" I feel these to be very liquid. *edit* forgot about Morgans and peace also

I don't want to put a portion of my eggs in the 80% Canadian basket if it is a waste of my financial resources when that money could go to something else that would have a bigger payout in the future when it comes to premium not just AG worth. I just notice that none of the people that replied mention 80% Canadian in what they collect.

80% Canadian in the U.S. gets tossed into the junk world silver pile and bought for 10% or more below melt. If you live in USA stick with U.S. silver or the foreign modern .999 bullion coins like Maples, Libertads, Kooks, etc. which you will recover some premium on.

Better quality 90%, ASE's, and Maples.

be diverse and get different things, only thing is avoid 35% silver like warnickels and 40% like the 1965-1970 kens, they are pretty hard to sell when you want to sell them

Sorry Windchild missed that. Today I topped off my first roll of Canadian Fifty Cent pieces. I do like the design on the Reverse.

Quote:Better quality 90%, ASE's, and Maples. I'm with CW on this and collect the highest quality 90% silver US coins I can find. Yes, these cost more than the beat up culls out there but that's fine with me. My collecting is partly about enjoyment and I enjoy looking at beautiful coins more than I enjoy looking at beat up coins... a LOT more! Most of these are BU quality with small numbers of AU, XF, VF, and F quality coins. Typically, the older a coin the lower the quality due to smaller numbers being available and the rapidly increasing price of BU & AU coins as they age. A BU 188x Morgan silver dollar, for example, costs more than a 1-oz. BU Maple or ASE and contains about 3/4 of the amount of silver as the newer bullion coins. They are classic beauties, though. I also collect ASE, Maples, and 5-oz. SilverTowne bars. I have nothing against 10-oz. or larger silver bars but just haven't purchased any of them so far.

I try to buy below spot. Private mint .999 isn't bad. I have found Mexican (.720 and .500)and Canadian (.800) to be under priced lately.
