I would appreciate your opinion on this cent. Its a chocolate brown color. '1' seems repunched. I thought it'll mbe AU.

Oh, golly. What a glorious piece of copper. Great strike. Easy AU. I think the rim crumbling is characteristic of N-2; we'll wait for someone more knowledgeable than I to attribute it.

What a coin.

This is a nice looking coin, and is one that I would love to have myself. I'm new to these coins & am hoping to get one sometime, so I tried my hand at grading this one before I looked at SuperDave's comments. I put this coin at an EF-45, based on the slightly flat spot in the hair above the forehead & the wear on the bow & ribbon on the reverse. I know ya'll are more experienced than I am, am I way off here?

I don't know the correct words to explain what I am seeing. Looks like from 11-5 o'clock the strike is fantastic, and 6-10 is worn. Especially the stars on the obverse. Is this typical? Almost like it was not sitting correctly or something.

The reverse seems to illustrate the came concept, except from 10-4 is strong and the rest looks worn. I am wondering if there is no wear on this coin at all, and the strike is the sole contributor to the "look".

I assumed that the stars you mentioned were the result of the strike, pictures I have looked at of these coins show similar characteristics. Hopefully someone who knows more than me(just about anyone) could throw a little light on the subject.

I've seen coins with stars like this. I don't think that's wear. Probably the strike. I don't collect these so don't know much about it. Its for my type set.

Remember, we're talking about technology of 190 years ago. Die alignment was not nearly as exact a science then as it is now. I took the weaker left-side strike into account when considering grade; a more even strike would show more detail on the forehead, I think, than this coin does.

I thought I might be missing something with this one. I assumed the flat stars were due to the strike, but didn't consider that the hair detail above the forehead might also be affected. Seems logical, as that area is a high spot on the same side of the coin as the less detailed stars.

That's what I was trying to figure out I guess. If that's the case, just a weak/off level strike, I don't see what would keep this from MS?

The color is fantastic too!!

I don't think the hairline detail loss is due to strike. There are a couple of areas that appear to show slight wear on the wreath, in addition to the hairlines and the top of the coronet. I think this coin is in EF40 condition. Very beautiful!!

I knew I was way off thinking it was close to MS. Oh well, practice makes perfect. I just kind of assumed you would see Something in the fields as far as marks if it was circulated. I find it hard to believe something moved around enough to rub that deeply to be noticeable, and not have any marks/nicks...

At least I was kind of close on Superdave's 1910 cent.

Don't forget, shatsi - Susan grades according to "real" standards, and I tend to market grade. I think the coin would see AU if submitted, even though according to the established standards Susan grades by, it shouldn't.

We're both right, and so are you.

That's definitely an N-2 variety, and a nice looking one, too !!!
My opinion on the grade is AU.

I'm going to have to go AU. There is enough of what appears to be mint luster for me to believe weak strike on the stars and hair rather than obvious wear.
Any way I join the chorus - cool looking coin!

I really like the look of those surfaces. That might be a coin I'd send in for slabbing. It might be worth much more in a good slab than raw.
