Was going through some rolls tonight and came across this one. At first I through it was some dried up glue or something. With a closer look I had to kind of chuckle. Never expected to find one of these floating around in circulation I guess. Image: kennedy penny1.jpg42.24 KB

Yup, pretty common those are. They usually came attached to a card that advertised a financial institution and had a list of comparisons between Kennedy and Lincoln for you to ponder. Like the fact they were both assassinated in the presence of their wives, and their accused killers both went by three names - John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald. Other comparisons exist, some of which are on these interesting cards.
The coins - generally 50c - $1 items, attached to the cards up to $5. I think it would be fun to try collecting a date/mint set of memorials with the Kennedy counterstamp. I believe for the better part they stopped producing these around 1980. Most are dated 1963 for obvious reasons.

Lincoln with a pipe, cigar, bible, rose, star, Liberty Bell - all pretty common. They sold at truck stops and the like for a buck or two. A lot of them went to help charities.
The states were a thing that could be ordered as a set. I've seen a board that was sold to house them once, the guy wanted too much for it or I would have bought it. Never saw another one, but it had 50 spots for coins and the state name under each one. I have a complete set of 1974, and a dozen or so mixed here and there that I have found in change.
1976 was a big year for counterstamping cents with bicentennial themes. Also common are 1976 cents plated in nickel or gold after the counterstamp.
Other very common counterstamps include the free masons and the Shriners. I have more than two dozen different examples of those that were purchased for $1-$5 or found in change.
Other than that most counterstamps are just odd initials or names, sometimes just numbers punched into cents. Most have no useful meaning at this point because nobody has really dug down deep to research them. Older counterstamps get researched, 20th century counterstamps rarely receive much individual attention.

I remember seeing these back in high school, always thought they looked pretty cool. I have also seen the pipe & cigar smoking lincolns, but none of the others. It would be interesting to see a set of the ones with the states.
