Last weekend we ordered this 2006 anniversary set from ebay, https://goccf.com/t/127886Today the set came in and I have a feeling the NGC slab has been tampered with. First off 2 of the coins have blemishes on the rim of the coins and second the slab looks to have been pried open and glued/taped back. I have pictures that hopefully show this and need advice as to dispute this and ask for my money back. Thank you in advance for helping!

If you feel they been broken into, I would send it back, to have 2 different coins toned on the edge is not good....

Would the toning still rate as 69's in your opinion? We are new to this and just don't need to be ripped off. Would you send back if you made the purchase? We paid $275 for these and a 2012 proof SAE.

They can be tone and still be MS or PR 69 or 70, that's not the problem, the case is cracked and it lets the air in and will let the coins tone more, not sure if they removed the coins, because the money coin is the RP, which looks OK....I wouldn't want a broken case for your first purchase...just my opinion...

Does NGC guarantee the case? Maybe I can contact them and pay for just a new case to stop the toning. Is this possible and economical? Sorry for all the questions, my Wife and I were so excited and now we aren't so sure.

NGC will re holder it for you for a cost, I don't deal with NGC so you need to talk to them. But if it looks like those coins have been removed they won't re holder, because its an Anniversary set, some people could piece together 3 coins to make it look like a Anniversary set.. You should be happy with what you buy, the seller should send it back for you, did he disclose that it was cracked or taped, he should be the one that makes it right..just my opinion

He did not disclose it being taped or cracked. I'm not really sure if it is cracked just looks like pry marks up on the corner. I sent him a message and asked for explanation. Is there anyway of knowing for sure if this has been opened or not, like a security thing?

If he takes returns, send them back! If he disclosed a cracked slab, you may be on the hook for them. If you used Paypal, there's always the buyers assurance plan. It never worked for me but, you should at least alert ebay of the problem and work to resolve the issue with the seller. Open a dispute, quickly, so they can freeze the money until the issue is resolved.

I would wait till you hear from him, see what he says, ask him to fix the case. Personally I would send it back and look for another good deal, they always come along. You won't be happy looking at a taped up or cracked case or spend more on fixing it. Just remember you spent what $275 plus $65 on your ASE , your at $340 now, if you fix it, w/ shipping, ins. probably cost you another $25 to $30,your at $370.. I think you could find a set for that much... I hope this works out for you, Sorry you had this happen to your first purchases...

We paid a total of $275 for it and the 2012 proof. I put the case under a microscope and it does not appear to have been opened, what I was seeing is the white inside the case itself. I looked closely at the teeth of the case and they are all unmarred. My wife believes the tape was used to display a price on the set at a shop or something like that. I appreciate all the help and am still going to wait to hear from seller before I make my final decision.

Did you try removing the tape to see if it was actually holding the slab together? Not sure if that would make it so you can't return it though so I would wait to hear back from the seller first before messing with it.

Keep in mind, the process used to seal the slab can sometimes look like what you see on the edges of this one, and they are not air-tight by nature.

The picture of the slab corner looks like normal "boil out" from ultrasonic welding.

The seams look fine to me. The tape could be anything. Your wifes theory is a good possibility. Quote: If he takes returns Ummm, ALL ebay sellers HAVE to accept returns. They made that mandatory a few months back. All sellers now have a 14 day return policy. As I have said, ebay screws its sellers over at every possible turn. Anyway, ken, if you just flat out dont like the coins, then return them. From your pics, I might lean towards returning them. Butit may be nicer in hand. Ultimately though, YOU have to be 100% happy with the coins.
