Does anyone else just pull AU and BU coins from rolls and keep them? I am starting to develop a small collection outside my album because I feel like I rather "save" them from circulation and prevent them from getting ruined?

I would only do your suggestion if the coins were:
1) silver
2) copper
3) errors or
4) some other type of numismatic rarity
Just pulling out AU and BU coins without using the above criteria to prevent them from getting worn does not appeal to me.
Common AU and BU coins do not interest me at all since they are most likely later date coins that are not going to appreciate fast enough in my lifetime to make it worth my time to deal with.
In summary for me to really enjoy this hobby a coin should have some degree of numismatic history or elevated monetary value...

I normally do not unless it is pre 1980. Look at it this way. No matter what anyone else saves or doesn't save, it's your collection, and you decide what to collect, no one else.

I do. In fact, last Friday I got quite a thrill CRH when I pulled a 1974S proof out quarter out of circulation.

Yea,
I do it all of the time. I just stick them in rolls together and label it as a Miked AU roll of coins

Just pulling out AU and BU coins without using the above criteria to prevent them from getting worn does not appeal to me. This is the same criteria that I use too. But sadly, I only "collect" very few coins, most of what I'm pulling is to turn profit not collect and hold. Please dont judge

Me too! Some of these shiny things I just need to keep. It's like a collection within a collection. It's really bad with Silver Ike's and Franklin's. Is there a cure for this?

As far as cents are concerned, I pull anything pre-1970 that looks like it was just struck. Everything after that (unless it's copper; I keep all copper) I let go.

Quote: Is there a cure for this? Forget the cure, carm; it's an addiction. And supposed cures for addictions are short-lived and essentially useless in the long run. On-line help groups, however, could provide some temporary relief if one really wants to be free of this addictive but neat practice.

I am trying to put together a roll of each year of Kennedy halves, all in BU. Oddly enough, the best halves I have found, in terms of grading, came from customer rolls at banks. I buy boxes weekly, and that's normally where I get silver and proofs. But getting lucky with gem bu's has come almost entirely from CWR's.

You bet I do! I love saving coins with eye-appeal, no matter their age. Everything I pull now will be older some day, and maybe I'll pass them along to my as-yet-nonexistent grandkids. I was also raised to appreciate and keep in the best possible shape all those things from the past, so I think that plays a part of it too. Keep saving those beauies, Igleos!
