The edge is a very shiny silver color

Its plated, some companies plate this after leaving the mint, and sell them as collectors items, but almost all collectors consider these damaged coins.

Collector's Corner USA is selling sets of (sigh) colorized coins and platinum plated Presidential dollars. It's my understanding -- but I do not know this for certain -- that it would cost more to remove that tiny amount of platinum than the platinum is worth. Anyway, that being said, I'd keep it. I have a gold plated State Quarter that my husband found in his change. It most likely came from the Home Shopping Network. I keep it with my little collection of oddities.

I would have to agree with the plated idea simply because there is a slim chance that another planchet of a different metal would be the exact same size as the dollar planchet. You could weigh it and see what the weight difference is, if its heavier than the dollar coin then you would know its probably plated, if its lighter it would need more research done on it

Weight won't tell you anything. The additional weight from the plating will be well less than the mint tolerance amount so in almost every case a plated coin will still weigh within the mint's legal weight range.

If I suspect a coin is plated, usually a dead giveaway is the fact that even the small nicks and bag marks are plated over. Use a good loupe (10x or so) and look into the scratches, nicks, dings etc, especially on the edge of the rim. My guess is that you will see these plated over. I have a James Madison 2007 P&D plated pair that I found in a roll. Steel cents are great for this plating to learn on.
