I have looked at all the past threads about this that I could find. People here seem to want to pay max of $8 a pound total (with shipping). I would pay that, but I can't find anything that cheap! Even when buying large poundage it seems to be well over that price.
Is local coin stores the only good way to do it these days? That's another thing I read in past posts.

Thanks for any help!

Good luck! And if you find any that cheap please let us know. I bought 20 pounds about 3 years ago on ebay. If I remember correctly I paid around $60 + $10 shipping. Haven't ran across a deal like that ever again. I can't even find a dealer at any of the local shows bulk selling them.

OP Are you only trying to get 1 pound at a time? Locally if I buy 5 pounds I am able to get them for $9 a pound.

I really just want a good deal. I'm not trying to buy a truck load, but I wouldn't mind having 5 pounds give or take to start with

The AVERAGE World coin weighs around 5 to 6 grammes.
A pound of World coins would contain around around 80 coins, + or -10.
At 10 cents per coin, that would cost $8 per pound. A reasonable lot sold on ebay should contain very few duplicates.

An OK way to begin a collection of World coins, but becomes increasingly difficult to avoid duplication with continuing lots bought in this way.

after I hit about 125 countries the bulk lots yielded very little new additions. after that it got cheaper to buy specific lots or individual coins.

at 189 countries now, and aprx 1900 coins (one of each typeset). I bought a 10 lb bulk lot because I was bored, ended up pulling maybe 5 keepers. although I sold the rest for what I paid, it was a long process for 5 coins.

i am thinking of branching off into themed side collection(s) or upgrading what I have. neither is a 'by the pound option'

you might want to try blackmountaincoins.com (usa), educationalcoins.com (usa) or colonialacres.com (canada). not alot of old stuff (mostly 1970s and newer) but fair prices and relatively unsearched compared to ebay lots.

Wade: Your next step is to 'wade' through dealerrs' junk boxes.

The guy I go to has junk boxes of various price ranges, from 10 c. per coin, then 20 c.p.c, 50 c.p.c, $1 p.c. $2 p.c. $5 p.c. $10 p.c., and tops at $20 p.c.

Not bad, when you can go through 50 to 100 or more coins, in a junk box at $20 per coin! Years ago, I found some very nice European hammered coins in this manner, as well as quite a few cheaper ancients.

Black mountain is expensive though... the only way to get $8 per pound is to go $200 in! I don't have that kind of money to play coins with :(
Wish I did! The opposite end is the single pound they sell for $15 plus SH which is way expensive. The other prices are in between, but cost a lot still...

Bro,

blackmountain might seem expensive, but if you pick 1 pound out of 10 and then sell the leftovers on ebay it it works out (in the end you only up paying for the one pound you kept). use your ebay earnings to order another fresh bulk batch, rinse, repeat. the initial purchase might sting but once you start the cycle its really not that bad.

I've also had good success trading pound for pound with members here. then all you are out is the shipping.

interesting....So you buy the $110 10 lb, keep one pound, sell the other 9 lbs on ebay unsearched? what about ebay fees and shipping? You would have to sell them for$13ish, +SH to make even and get the coins for what you paid. Then you would have only your time into it. Do you sell them in 4th lb lots? I see those selling for a lot higher per lb prices.

Also, selling bulk coins gets people bad feedback from what I've seen. People get a bad batch and give bad feedback sometimes. Its sad but I have seen it.

NO! definately search every coin! there are still some gems out there in the wild. I've bought 10 lb lots that have yielded multiple $10-$15-$20 coins

i buy 10-20 lbs, pick through it, keep the singles I want, sell the rest. I will sell as a bulk batch except for any coins that will sell for $10 or more (i wont list $3 or even $5 single coins, its not worth the time).

if you are honest in your listings (i put EVERY coin on the scanner bed, about 125 at a time, so people know exactly what they are getting) you wont get bad feedback. start your auctions low and let the market decide what its worth. for every lot that I have 'lost' money on I usually have one or more that I break even or even make a little. (but yes, ebay fees etc do add up)

but really, if anyone expects to make money this is the wrong hobby. I only spend what I can afford to loose, if I break even I figure it was a good day

I see. Good strategy showing every coin to avoid bad feedback! I'm trying to win some auctions but it's not easy. There are some aggressive bidders out there!

Many sellers don't keep them out on the table, but have them if you ask. In my experience these lots generally include coins from large collections that they have already picked through. I (or rather my son) has paid as little as $4 a pound for them.
