Hi All - Probably a good question for the stamp collectors out there... So, even though I think the Presidential dollars are sort of a gimmicky idea that should have never happened, the bug in me compels me to collect them. However, I've been collecting them by acquiring the first day coin covers issued by the U.S. Mint, although I but them on ebay rather than the Mint directly, which has saved me roughly two-thirds from U.S. Mint issue price. I'm also fond of them because I think they're education, and may make a good educational tool for my kids someday. I've also collected the entire State Quarters/Territories First Day Covers Series, for similar reasons. Within the last week, I won an ebay lot including the first 16 covers (duplicating much of what I had already, but I'll just sell the extras), but these 16 came in an album I liked, but after searching on Google cannot find anything like it. I'd really like to pick on up like it for the State Quarters covers. I've included pictures of the album. The album is titled "Philatelic Covers" is is a blue two-ring binder, but is otherwise void of any brand name or part number. The album pages have the product name "LUCIDVIEW" and what appears to be an item number "6963K" Like I said, searching on each of these gets me nothing on Google. My two questions: 1) Does anyone know how to find an album similar to the one I've described above? 2) Failing that, can anyone point me to a good album-based solution to storing my coin covers? Regards, Brian *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

well, "Philatelic" means "stamp collecting", and lots of stamps are celebrated/released with First Day Covers (FDCs), so checking a few stamp collecting supply sites, I came across these which look similar: http://www.stampparaphernalia.com/s...album_10.htmThese look good too: http://www.stampparaphernalia.com/s...lbums.htm#SGThanks for bringing this to my attention. I, too, have the Presidential $1 Coin FDCs and was trying to figure out a way to store/display other than the shoebox I have. The FDC album is a great idea. Thanks!

I was just Googling some more on this because I now do want to display my FDCCs (thanks again for the inspiration, bkprewitt) and here's an article with some more options. http://news.coinupdate.com/storage-...covers-0147/The author prefers albums that only have a single cover per page so that you get to enjoy each cover separately when viewing. I'm more about saving space (and my shelves are spaced much further apart than one cover) so would prefer two per page like the one bkprewitt showed above. Gonna probably have to buy 5 or more to get my Presidential FDCCs and State Quarter CC's tucked away safely. Anyone else have any suggestions or pictures of what they're currently doing for this? The very reason I was drawn to this forum in the first place a couple of years ago was to find information about the State Quarter FDCC's so this is topic is a propos to me.

Not usually associated with stamps, but you may want to try the Whitman web site. Request a catalog. Near the end of that catalog is many pages dealing with stamps by Harris. Nothing to loose and a free catalog.

Thanks, carl. Good suggestion.
And related but slightly off-topic -- while I am almost exclusively an online shopper at this point, I love paper catalogs of those things that are near and dear to my heart... Lego... REI... U.S. Mint... Woodcraft... Victoria's Secret*...
* and yes, I have the maturity of a gnat.

Thanks to all for the feedback so far. The article that CelticKnot posted was informative, although like him, I don't think I want a solution that's one cover per page. Someone on another forum (CoinTalk) suggested the following: http://www.mdstamp.com/index.php?ma...4c83eedd2240They're PVC free, but I wonder if they're the right size for coin covers (I guess I'll measure when I get home to figure it out). Also, the description mentions the pages having black background inserts. I'd be fine if they we're removable so that both sides of the cover would be viewable, but I'm not sure if they are. I'll try to call the supplier and find out. Someone else on CoinTalk pointed me to this: http://www.mysticstamp.com/viewProd...sp?sku=DS950This might actually be the album I have or similar to it, but no picture is included on their website, but I'm not for sure. Apparently, the album I have was made by Fleetwood, which was purchased by Mystic. THe link above is the only FDC album on he Mystic site that has a description that at least somewhat matches the album I have. -Brian

Ok, so bumping this as I want to pull the trigger and purchase albums for my Presidential dollar FDCC's and State Quarter FDCC's. bkprewitt, have you decided on anything? One thing is, the vinyl covers of the ones we've been tossing around seem kinda cheap and tacky when you compare them to Danscos, Whitmans and Intercept Shields. Would prefer something not vinyl.

CelticKnot - I've ordered two of these in brown (trying to get them to look as close to Danscos as possible), and waiting for them to arrive: http://www.mdstamp.com/index.php?ma...4c83eedd2240I was planning to update once they arrived, and I had a chance to evaluate. I will mention that I did call the seller, and they did say the black inserts mentioned in the product description are removable, so that both sides of the covers are visible. We'll see. -Brian

I emailed them because it was taking awhile. They told me it was on back order, and would ship 10/1. So I'm still waiting.

For CelticKnot and whoever else is interested... So I ordered the Showgard FDC #6 album from the followin link: http://www.mdstamp.com/index.php?ma...4c83eedd2240First, a note about the customer service at Potomac Supplies... it's not great. I ordered on September 12 after calling the day before and talking to a representative who assured me that the albums work work fine for first day coin covers. Having not received it by September 28, I sent an email to inquire and told it was on back order, and would ship the following week. This was the first indication I ever received it was on back order. I finally received October 4, while I was out of town. As for the actual product, my hopes were initially good when I took the album out of its packaging, as I liked its looks: The album did come with black inserts in each of the pages, but they were removable: However, as I began inserting the coin covers, it became obvious it would not work well. First, the pockets were not wide enough (left to right) meaning the covers stuck out of their pockets about a half and inch or so. Obviously, a storage solution not covering and protecting the covers is less than ideal: Second, once loaded in, the left edges of coin covers would bump up against each other, making it hard to turn the pages, even causing damage to one of my covers in the form of a bent corner, again on account of the album and its pages not being wide enough. That got me to thinking that perhaps the #8 size album would work better, but I doubt that would be the case, as the coins make coin covers too thick so that the album does not close. Below is a picture demostrating this problem with 10 covers still left to insert: I'm trying to return, but the seller has fallen silent to my emails requesting a return. I feel a return in warranted in this case given the misinformation given to me by the seller when I inquired directly. No reasonable person could think that these albums are a legitimate storage solution for coin covers. So it's back to the drawing board. I think at this point that the only reasonable solution is a 3-ring binder with D-rings, maybe a 3-inch binder is enough to hold the 56 State/Territories covers and enough to hold to 40-50 Presidential covers that we'll have once the series completes. I've seen these and wonder if they'll work: http://www.amazon.com/Lighthouse-VA...p/B001GBGVXM-Brian

bkprewitt, I moved this to the 'Supplies, Books, Reference, Software, etc' forum to see if we can get some more opinions.
My question... Can you stagger the cards, having every other page face the opposite way so that the coins line up in two places instead of one?

jbuck - I'm sure you could do that, but it seems it would be aesthetically undesirable, at least for me. Perhaps a better solution is to get the #8 size and remove half the pages, but even then it's getting a little too thick, plus it gets twice as expensive and you have all of these unused pages. I think these coin covers are the type of thing made for a 3-ring binder type solution.

You are probably right. I was trying to visualize the layout alternating, but it would probably be too strange. Oh well.
