I moved to a new area recently. Now it takes me 20 minutes to get to my nearest key bank. I am trying to start up another accoount locally with a diffent bank, but I'm not too knowledgable as to whether or not there are charges sometimes. My keybank has no charges, its a student checking account. I am still in school, so I guess I can start more.
I just want to know, are there any fees I should ask about or look out for when starting a bank account? Thanks for any help! Edited by Broseph 09/10/2012 12:22 pm

It would be best to go the the banks and shop around like you were buying a car. Ask questions hear what they have to say and through talking to a few of them you will learn what to look for.

What I was finding were savings accounts were a bit easier to set up without fees, as long as you kept a minimum balance.
Then just make sure that you can swipe your ID or provide a different method to prove you have an account instead of swiping a Debit or credit card, since most of the time you won't have one with a savings account. This being so important if you are doing this for the purpose of CRH, as you wouldn't want to get caught off guard when asked to prove you are a bank customer (CRH goes so smooth I find as soon as they find out you have an account with them).
Other than that I echo TrickyxMick: go into a few local branches that would be convenient for you to go into and ask to sit down and go over your options with them. Mention you have a free checking account through your other bank, and if there are any fees, they should disclose them to you up front.

Avoid Wells-Fargo and Bank of America. I closed both of those accounts when they started charging me fees for checks I don't write. Ask about minimum balances and fees for ATM/Debit cards as well as check fees.

Good tips! I hate bank of america. Long story short, they messed up some fees and wouldn't back down on us paying them. They are crooks. I will probably write some of those things in a list and maybe ask around this friday

Sorry to hear that...I've had a BOA account for almost five years, never once a fee, and lately there has been minimal account activity on my part, maybe once or twice a year. Watch out for minimum deposits, minimum account activity, these can cause sudden fees. Direct deposit solved a lot of those issues for me.

I would go to a Credit Union before going to any of the big banks. See if there are any in your area.

Well, we had a bad experience... I know some BOA may be different, but I will not do business with them. They will never touch our money again.
