Contemporary or otherwise?

I heard of a dealer who specialized in collecting contemporary counterfeits and supposedly he had a fake 3CN. Otherwise, I never have.

3CS sure...but not 3CN.

I'm not including obvious bad copy jobs from China, etc. I mean real copies meant to either circulate or fake the collector.

I have a real one, I have never heard of fakes.

Nickel Three Cent Pieces were made 1865 - 1889.

Here is CCF's pages about them

I think that is one of the modern Chinese pieces not a contemporary counterfeit. (That thing looks like it has a reeded edge!)

I seem to recall having heard of a contemporary fake 1868, but I don't recall if I have ever actually seen one. I don't think so.

These pictures illustrate and justify the good reasons for examining coins in hand before purchase.

In a lot of cases, examination with a loupe will reveal differences in style that are not obvious in poor pictures. Side by side examination with known genuine coins is a great help in identifying suspicious style variations.

How can you tell that Moe's coin is fake?

What stands out to me on Moe's coin is the detail. Part of the bow at the bottom is missing, some of the leaves are missing, the bridge of her nose is gone, and the coin overall has an appearance of being a coin produced from a wax copy. Its like the detail is gone but the condition of the coin is immaculate. And the reeding, I don't remember mine having reeding.
Compare Moe's to Fuzzy's, the 1866 posted has all of the details above but with a lot more circulation.

The missing detail is not a good indicator of a fake as it can be seen on genuine coins due to overpolishing of the die as well.

I have a 3CN (and many others) one in my DANSCO 7070 Deception Album.

Doh, never mind, I did not read the OP thoroughly, mine is from the Orient.

The only ones I have seen are really bad fakes, nothing of the quality I think Prethen is looking for.

Yep...I still have never heard of a contemporary counterfeit (I doubt there are any) or any superb fakes (yet).

No I think they did exist, I saw what I believe was one recently on a thread in another forum. If I run across it again I'll try and post a picture here.
