Seems to wrap around to some similar stuff on the reverse. Or, God forbid, penetrate through!

Dirt?

Some other debris or corrosion?

Kind of odd it is on the obverse and reverse in corresponding places.

It also looks like someone tried to clean the area as the rim is lighter in those areas.

Maybe dirt or grime since that area is noticeably lighter.

My first impression .. that is was hung from something like a charm bracelet. And that what ever held it to the bracelet, was clipped or pressed on at that location.

Of course that is just a guess on my part.

I'm hardnosed about such coins.
If an 1877 isn't slabbed I just ignore it.
Not even going to spend time trying to guess what its problem is.

Yes, with all the counterfeits out there I wouldn't take a chance on an 1877 that wasn't slabbed unless it was mixed in with other coins in a lot and nobody noticed it and got it really cheap.

I would not buy an 1877 if it was not slabbed. I would not buy it

It seems like a lot of money for a cruddy penny.

Buy a gold coin instead.

I am still going with, this coin was hanging from some sort of jewelry.

I can see where there is a different color at the same location at the obverse and reverse. The crud at the edge/rim, was where dirt/sweat/grim got under, what ever was holding this coin to the jewelry piece. Or some metal to metal had some reaction, and started eating into the coin. Then there could have been some teeth on the clip that held the coin, and dug into the coin a little.

Here is my crude example.

Gotta say, though, if you're going to display a coin as jewelry, why hang it from that point on the edge?
