Or actually what would you pay for it, or would you even buy it with the scratch on the obverse?   Half dollars are my favorite to collect. I have recently completed my franklin album. My kennedy with proofs album is getting close, and so is my walker album. I was at a coin show recently, and purchased this coin, a seated, and a barber, just to get me started. I didnt have much cash left as my wife spent alot on her Mercury dimes. I didnt want to leave without grabbing a capped. I will say what I paid after some responses, dont be shy  |

First of all, congratulations on your first Capped Bust half purchase. I personally collect this series and I think you will fall in love with them. There are a lot of ways to collect these and you may find that you like doing these by variety. Attribution of these coins is great fun. You will want to purchase Early Half Dollar Die Varieties by Al C. Overton for this purpose if you decide this interests you.
This coin is an O-108 which has a rarity rating of 2, so that does not add any value to it, unfortunately. I see VF25 details, but the damage hurts the value considerably.
Personally, I would pay around $45-50 for this coin. It's a good starter coin, but I would upgrade as soon as I could if I were you.

I would be at around $50 on the coin. It's got nice details, but the scratches are significant and hurt its value. Congrats and hopefully you can upgrade it.

Thanks for looking at my coin. Sounds like I did good on it, I gave 35$, it was actually marked 39$ because of the scratches. Susanlynn, thanks for the info on the variety. I do need to start learning more about this series, and costs of each coin. I almost bought 1818/7 for 150$, but I hadnt researched it enough to know if it was a good deal or not, think I may have missed out.

Its a nice starter coin for the series with lots of detail although I'm glad you got it cheap. Be careful Bust Halves are addictive!

Without knowing the condition and whether the surfaces were original or not, I can't say whether the 1818/7 that you were interested in was worth $150 or not. Generally, you can get a good idea of what these are selling for on ebay by searching completed listings. Go by the Buy It Now listings instead of auction listings, though, as BIN listings sell for higher prices. |

Yeah Joe you got that right on being addictive.haha. I checked on ebay on that 1818/7 I think I missed out, and am kicking myself now. I should of known at the show, when 2 other people were looking hard at that bust half. The overdate was real pronounced compared to the ones I saw on the bay going for higher. I was hanging out at the next dealers table for like 20 minutes, he bought about 20 Indian cents off me, every time someone asked to see that coin, I was thinking "no no no no" thats mine, then didnt even buy it...lol. Just throwing this out there I think I can post a trade list soon on here, if any of you bust folks have doubles for trade or sell, let me know. Iv got some bu silver kennedy and franklin proofs, etc... stuff like that I plan to post in the right forum of course. |
