I have recently purchased this gold coloured Victoria penny dated 1858 in a job lot.It measures 34 mm and weighs 18.9 grams.
I wonder if anyone could give me any info about it. I imagine it has a gold or gold coloured wash.
Sorry about the photograph. I am hoping for a better camera in due course.
Many thanks,
Sheen

It looks to be gold plated to me; I rather like it!
The gold plating does NOT help the value, though.
This coin is the right weight for a copper penny.

I have a couple Canadian pennies and a US Indian Head penny that are completely gold colored. My thought was that it was either heat treated or went through a chemical change based on how they were stored. They look neat. I wish they were gold.lol

Sometimes for Golden Jubilee festivities or similar events certain coins were simply gilted (gold plated) over and passed out by jewlers and the like ... I suspect gold unless its a modern fake brass piece ... one or the other ... collectors do collect gilt pieces ... since SEI says its the right weight we can probably exclude brass/bronze ... seems its gilt (gold) wash over the original host coin of copper ...

Sheen, we're not supposed to like coins that have been altered, defaced or plated. 'Cos coins are serious business, right?

I just love this and think it looks beautiful>

Yours looks good, even if its not real.

Like yours, mine is not an actual 1883 Racketeer Nickel, but I liked the looks
