I have used the search function and gone through a few dozen threads. I have also used google many times.

It seems I keep meeting the same response...some variation of "full step Jefferson's are difficult to find for some years"

And.....no one will give what those years are! Except for 1964. That is the sole year I keep hearing.

So; what years should we really be looking for when completing our sets? I am filling a Dansco right now and am looking for high grade coins. Some are high grade but not of the quality I want and are merely waiting till I find that "right' one.

Are there any years I just should not count on finding in full step; but perhaps in a nice strike?

Thanks

That is a good question, I personally keep any pre-85 full step. Those 1964's are odd, because that same 1964 year, from what I heard, was made up until 1968 or 69. I would assume the Dies would get pretty worn over all

Off the top of my head

I would say that the 1952 1953 and 1954 1968 1969 1970 S minted coins
1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1968 1969 1970 D minted coins are probably the toughest. Bold type being really difficult.
More modern ones are 1976 1979 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 P & D

Here is a PCGS link for the price guide for these ... See the row with FS

Continuing with the 1964s the PCGS price guide lists as follows:
MS65 MS65 FS MS66 FS Mintage
1964 4 350 3550 1,024,672,000
1964 D 6 725 7500 1,787,297,160

WOW! Look at the mintages and you can see how scarce FS grades are!

Opps-sorry, my #s came out jammed up.

I would suggest getting a copy of Guide book to Buffalo and Jefferson nickels.
It is put out by Whitman..

It breaks down each nickel by year and mint mark, including full step information

None of them from 1954 through 1970 are common.

There are many scattered dates that are tough or impossible. The '68-S rarely even comes close for instance.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
Rest in Peace

Does FS refer to strike only or do the steps have to be free of any marks also?
Would this be FSJefferson-Full-Step-Nickels,-Which-Years-Are-Difficult?

Steps can't be "bridged" by marking. If a mark penetrates to the bottom of a couple steps they won't call it FS. The coin pictured looks like it might make it if the marks on the lower steps aren't too deep.
