That is *awesome*. :-)
Is it a contemp or a modern?

Very interesting. Can you tell me, for my own education, what are some of the other pick-up points compared to a genuine 1824 piece?

I find that the easiest way for me to tell if a Bust Half is counterfeit is to look at the shapes of the numbers (in the date) and the letters (USA). Most of the time, if its a die struck counterfeit (not a cast copy) the numbers and letters are thinner or shaped different than on real pieces. The shape of the eagle, its wings and the portrait on the obverse are usually slightly smaller or thinner as well. When you collect Bust Halves, you get used to the "look" of the real coins and when they don't look quite right, its pretty obvious to the Bust Half collector....

Profile is wrong, 0 in 50 too small, the period after the C in 50 C should not be that high, engraving of the branch is crude.

Very nice find! I haven't seen many counterfeits of this series and this one is definitely interesting.

Susan There are many contemporary fakes, and there is even a reference book for them: Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust half dollars by Keith Davignon. It is about to go into the 2nd edition. Very neat book

It's been in the second edition for some time now. By now the second edition is possibly out of print.
