is that a raised surface or an impression? sort of looks like starting at Jefferson's upper lip an impression starts, then just below his nose the impression stops causing a step up to the normal surface between the nose tip and the E. Is that what you see? Believe that would be struck-through debris of some kind.

or my observations may be totally off

To me, it looks raised at the tip of the E, but it looks like an impression under the nose. Thus my confusion. I guess I'm leaning toward struck through as you suggest - and partially based on the shape of the thing.

That's a common place for die cracks, but I would agree with Fuzzy. And, it doesn't connect with the rim of the coin as would most commonly be expected from a die crack.

The coin came from a VLDS die. Anything is possible then.
