I have very little experience...but am reasonably sure that this flaw is the result of a die break. Look at the date, for the major flaw. I've included a close up of it, too. There is a second apparent die break at 10-11 o'clock on the obverse, as well.

Thanks for any opinions...good, bad or whatever...on either the coin or my photography.

Those do look to be die cracks. I see quite a few die cracks. I like the die cracks. Gives the coin a little character. Nice coin.

Great looking coin. I am new to taking coin pics, but have found that lighting from the side seems to reduce shadows.

Yup those are die cracks and while adding interest to the coins they seldom add any value.

If your camera has a white balance custom setting function you can eliminate or reduce the gold tone that is present with incandecent lighting by adjusting the white balance for that type of lighting.

The pic quality looks pretty good !!

Thanks, everyone. Metalman...I assumed no added value. What about diminished value? I see there is another 1883 with the same die crack in it for sale on ebay. (We're not talking big bucks here, but it just got me to wondering. Maybe I'll start a collection of this coin. )

Hi hunter20ga

In most cases die cracks will not affect the grade ,,and thus the value will stay intact.

unless someone places a value on coins with die cracks and then they may by individual preference pay a bit more for such examples when faced with need,, I know I have and probably will again.

I like Die cracks !

I have a AU58 Certified 1883 with the same cracks only mine are from star to star all the way around. It does add a little character to the coin. I'm also a new member and will learn to post photo soon, hopefully.

Thanks, Gerry

Gerry...these photos are a little dark. They looked better (at least I thought they did) when I took them!

At any rate, there are some additional die cracks between stars on this coin, too, but maybe not as extensive as what your coin has.

One of the "cool" parts is that coins with similar cracks probably were minted about the same time with the same dies...sort of "brothers and sisters" or at least kissing cousins! Guess that's part of the "character" such minor imperfections impart!
