Is anyone here ordering the silver 1/2 oz. one cent with the gold plated leaf? With the mintage of 30,000 it is not garnering much discussion or selling out overnight but in my opinion it is the best looking "tribute" penny. I also wonder if this will push the aftermarket price on its little brother from the 1812 silver proof set. That had mintage of 20,000 and has been selling in the $65 to $100 range. I ordered one from the RCM...to help push me a little closer to the MC level!!

I just ordered the gold coin instead. I think that for the price of $129.99 its not a terribly huge markup, and I like the look of the gold coin better than this silver one. Although this coin does look nice as well.
I will be waiting to see if my dealer has the farewell to the penny set, that's going to be a HUGE item. I might just buy 2, one to flip :P

I bought 2. For me and myself. If I was filthy rich, I would get a few of the 5 oz pennies.

Yes- ordered the 1/2 and the 1/25 and the 5oz and the set The half might be the best looking of them all but I think it will cut into the fine silver set penny. Why pay twice as much for a very similar coin that is much smaller in diameter and ag content?

^^^ Yeah. Either they are holding back for one last hurrah, or they really blew an obvious opportunity.

I can not agree more... yes, because it is penny-sized! Why pay a little less for a loonie size penny?

Fair enough though most ccf members seem more concerned with PM than diameters. Good to know there are some who value tradition. I still think the 1/2 will cannibalize and erode sales of the penny from the set and maybe they will end up being similar in price. If that happens, then it's not an either/or situation. Get both.

It's a nice little coin, the contrast is good between the colours. Should look nice in the old collection.

Good point. The 1/2 oz is much cheaper than the current going prices for the GP one cent. And it has >6x more silver.
But, they will make 50% more of the 1/2 oz than the sets (30000 v 20000), the one cent is the proper form factor, and there is an artificial scarcity of the one cent outside the set (most are probably still securely in sets).
So, you're probably right. They will probably end up at about the same price. But, that will probably be closer to the 1/2 oz issue price. On a sell-off dip, people might be able to pick up a nice bargain.

A penny-sized gold bullion coin was logical, but leave it to the mint to miss a great oppurtunity to attract new collectors.

^ agreed! even if it had to be a bit thinner, a same diameter gold penny would be awesome

I picked one up! Looks like a keeper and if the photos do justice to the coin it will be a beauty.

I just started buying gold this year, a 1/10th ounce penny sized gold penny would be an incredible showpiece.
