cipster-this is called a pattern coin. It was a design that the Mint thought about using and produced to see what they would be like if they were minted. Like an experimental coin. There are lots of different types of patterns. The RedBook has a few but not close to the real amount. They are usually very valuable and extremely rare depending on the type. Some are more famous than others. BTW CCya, that is a very beautiful coin! Love it! Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong

Quote: Given that it's a Pattern, chances are the coin has spent its' entire life in the hands of people who appreciated it. Especially considering it is actually a piece de caprice and not a true pattern. It wasn't really a proposed new design, it was a fantasy created in the mint in the late 1860's specifically for sale to collectors. There was a lot of this going on from the late 1850's to the early 1870's with some other "special creations" that came later. It may be contemporary to the 1868 large cent, or the "1863" In God We Trust quarters and halves that were made after 1866.

Conder101 is correct that this is not truly a pattern coin ... and was struck at the US Mint during a time of special consideration to collectors. That concept is tough for us to imagine today ... Today we call all the coins from that time period 'patterns' ... although not all were struck to sample new ideas as correctly suggested by rachums107. Regardless of provenance issues ... thrilled to see this gorgeous coin at a CCF thread. Lovely. David
