Given these two examples of a 1913-S Quarter: 1) Which is the higher grade? 2) Which has a better eye appeal? 3) Which has "personality?" My assessment: 1) Both are technically VG-8. 2) The one on the left has better eye appeal. 3) The one on the left has tons of personality. Opinions welcome.

If I owned both and were picking one to go in an album, I'd definitely choose the one on the left.

I like the one on the left a little better as well. It has slightly better details and the rims are full.

The one on the left is my pick, it has more detail on both the obverse and reverse.

If I were buying I would pay more for the coin on the left. The contrast in toning brings out the features and it has clearer rims.

The one on the left is the better coin I would say; with both better eye appeal and from the photo it looks a better grade also.
Maybe it is the photography but you can definately pick out more detail on the left coin (like the eagles eye and the leafs on the portrait) and the coin on the right you can see the rim is worn more so that it blends into the background on the upper left of the portrait.

I bought one of these two coins about 20 years ago. I was looking for dimes but did not find any. There were two of these in the dealer's case, side by side: One marked $450 and the other for $475. Both marked VG - both really VG I spent twenty minutes studying them. Now, which one did I buy, and WHY? Note: I have NEVER regretted my decision!

Grades represent a range, and if these are both VG, the one on the left is a high-VG and the one on the right is a low-VG.

I choose the left - the full rims made my decision

Only technical grade can be deduced from these images - their "cast" is similar to the background in both cases, meaning there was improper white balance throughout.
No subjective evaluation of "eye appeal" is possible, for that reason. Neither will resemble these images, in-hand. The one on the left would be my purchase for the better detail, but I'd know it wouldn't look the same color when I received it.

For the record, no "genuine" example of this date and mint has a full rim on the obverse on the left hand side. We are actively seeking a contrary example to prove us wrong. Any takers?

Yeah, I own the one on the left! Second best buy of my life.
You don't even want to know the story behind my 1895-O dime in Au 58.

The left one has full rims and more meat on it. A solid VG8.
The right one is a strong G06 or a weak VG8. Really a G07.

I like VG8 on the left and G6 on the right. That jawline is the main thing that separates these two.
