Hi folks,

I am not a coin collector but was going through an old box of misc. coins I have had for ages and came across a copper coin with the design of the 1867 copper Two Cent Piece but it has a 3 instead of the 2, making it what I thought was a 3 cent piece. My knowledge of 3 cent pieces was not sufficient for me to realize it was not the same design until I started researcheing 3 cent pieces on ebay and couldn't find one like mine. I eventually stumbled on a Two Cent Piece picture that looks like mine.

My coin is very worn and even bent a little, but the 1867 date is very clear. The 3 in the middle is very worn but I can't make my imagination turn it into a 2, it really looks like a 3 to me. Is this possible? Were any 2 cent pieces ever struck with a three? What do I have? Any help would be most welcome.

Can you post a picture? That would be very helpful. Both Obverse and reverse.

Welcome to the forum. We should be able to come up with a conclusion for you, but pics would help immensely.

You're saying the number in the middle is a 3, not III? I think the 3 cent peices were nickel anyway. The obverses of the 2 and 3 cent coins are noticebly different I think. WHat is your obverse design?

Well, I can't reproduce very well in my photo what I think I'm seeing with my eye, but here are pictures. Have a look anyway. I think the third one gives the best indication. As you can see it is the 2 cent piece through and through, except for what seems to be a three. Unfortunately the worst wear is at the most critical spot, the bottom of the number.

That's definately a 2. It's a well worn/corroded example of a common date.

Probably worth about 10 bucks.

Yeah I figure it is too. However there is still some doubt in my mind. Like I said, I can't make my imagination make it into a 2 when I look at it, and the pictures would obviously have a hard time capturing that considering the wear. I'll take it to a coin show for some hand's on looks some day as I think there may be a 3 there after all. I won't go with my hopes way up.

Any other opinions out there?

Look at the shape of the top of the 2 in this example

You'll better be able to hold yours up and see how it fits.

I could see why you think it looks like a three. That would be one cool pattern if it existed!
