I got to thinking, if I had to choose my favourite and least favourite Australian coins design what would they be? I came up with: -Best- -Worst- I dont have an image but it would have to be the 2011 Royal Wedding 20c. Kate Middleton looks like a monkey. If you had to pick one for each which design would they be?

Well....it was rather severe, but not that bad. Although, you are probably correct; it ,could possibly be one of the worst. As pretty as Her Highness is, I can't believe they released it as is.

My favourite design/s are probably circulation coins. I like 1991 rams head 50c (yes I know it is basically the same as many shillings but I think it look better on the 50c coin) and 1988 tall ships 50c. Both have lots of detail and look.......pretty!
The worst, probably the 2011 royal wedding 20c or the 2010 tax centenary 20c (I also think the subject of this one is ridiculous)

Too hard to choose. The post-1937 shilling was quite good, as was the pre-1937 penny, and a lot of the 50c designs have looked quite nice (Silver Jubilee, Bicentenary and 2001 states especially). I don't think we've had any designs that have absolutely no redeeming qualities though. The 2004 animals 50c probably wasn't up to the standard of most designs, but I don't think it was badly designed as such.

Wills on the Wedding 20c looks to have piano key teeth. I don't like that design either. It's hard to get a depiction of a person right. The Steve Irwin dollar is a shocker too.

Seems to be that while faces are in profile the designs are OK but as soon as they are face on or at an angle things go astray.

I am with you on the penny. Beautiful. I also agree about the wedding coin but dont like the Parkes commemorative dollar either. No matter how good the condition of the coin, poor old parkes face always looks worn out. No definition in the design at all

the 2004 50c student design is pretty bad, as is the Parkes dollar. I also dont like the 05 WW2 50c. I think they could have done something a bit btter there.

Best circulating coin would have to be the currennt series, worst is the 1994 50 cent piece, even the 2011 wedding was better than that.

I don't pursue NCLT, so I'm not taking any of them into account.
Favourites:
1911 penny - this is for personal reasons, rather than for its beauty - I remember when I first found one of these in Dad's till, and he said I could keep it: got me started in collecting. He told me that it was the first Australian penny, and his year of birth. Last year, I gave each of my sons a 1911 penny, and told them the story, on Dad's birthday.
1937 Crown - a visual pun - what a joke !
1959 florin - the emu-egg - ha !
1982 50-cent - the tribute to Australian Football, camouflaged amidst theCommonwealth Games events.
Worst -
1954 florin - Royal Visit- I could never work out what was on the reverse. My best guess was an alpaca on steroids. A few years ago I was looking at an enlargement on the internet, and realized that it was a muddled depiction of two animals.
I agree with what others have said about the Henry PARKES dollar, and the WILL & Cate 20-cent. On reflection, Pedro makes a good point: the 1981 50-cent, with Chas & Di turned out much better, and might be a better starting point for ant future attempts at depicting two people together.
