spg1, I think I have to agree with that! It's not a very good likeness of either of them, and very unflattering. But...someone in high places probably approved it. Whoever it was probably forgot to put their glasses on.

that is just another reminder why, for hundreds of years, profile effigies were the norm.

I recall the fuss made over the 1994 family 50 cent when it came out, especially in the Aust. Coin Review - it was howled down. My wife really likes the design, as she was having her first child then, so she related to it - I suppose I do too.

And coins like that are the reason that they should stay the norm. One of my favourites is the 2003 year of volunteers 20c. Lots of nice detail. And since the faces on the coin are anonymous it can get away with having a frontal view of the faces.

The 03 20c is one of the few coins where the faces dont look too bad front on.

The faces are tiny on the 2003 20c & are not faces of 'real' people, whereas you would expect the images on the W&K coin to at least look like them.
I think the RAM should stick to profiles in future, front on images seem to be too much of a challenge.

I find it hard to choose my fave design, will have to come back to that one. But the worst for me is the 2010 50c Äustralia day "Celebrate whats great" and the 2011 20c 10th Anniversary of volunteering...... why do you need a coin to celebrate 10 years?

Maybe we need a poll. I would tip 1927 florin to win best (early penny runner up) and Will and Kate for worst (runner up could be hard to tip).
Nominations for a poll could be posted here.

I was just waiting for some remarks like this I really do NOT like the 1994 'Year of the Family' 50 cents student design.
