Hi all, I like to collect type coins. For me collecting a variety of coins is more interesting and enjoyable than assembling an entire series, though it can cost as much or more to do so as I don't buy just the most common dates for the different types.

This is my small, and growing, collection of 20th Century type set holders. All will eventually be filled with uncirculated coins.

Capital Plastics 451-N with 18 openings. The coins are going to be removed from this holder and then it will filled with proof coins except for the Standing Liberty quarter of which no proof coins were struck and the Peace dollar which had an extremely small quantity of proofs produced in 1921 and 1922 which are prohibitively expensive.

Capital Plastics 460-B with 23 openings. I have two of this particular holder, one I completed in March of last year and a brand new never one used I just got yesterday.

Capital Plastics 490, 38 openings. This one has eight openings for the gold issues which will make it quite a sight when completed. It will also be the most challenging (expensive).

The fourth 20th Century type set holder is one made expressly for Bowers and Ruddy Galleries, Inc. by Capital Plastics I just recently shared with the forum in another post. The coins coming out of the #451-N holder are probably going to go into this one.

The fifth 20th Century type set holder is another which came in the lot of holders from the same source yesterday is a sheet of cardboard with 29 openings housed in a picture frame. I am going to fill this one with circulated coins and then hang it on the wall. I think it will display quite nicely when done.

I do not, nor intend to, ever get is the current Capital Plastics 20th Century type set holder. I do not like how they put all five of the 1999 State Quarters in it. One opening for a State Quarter type would have been enough and the collector could put whichever State Quarter he/she desired in the hole.

If anyone has any of 20th Century type set holders pictured here, or a style I dn't have, I would be very interested in acquiring it/them. I would like to have two of each type so when displayed I can show both the obverses and reverses of the coins in each.

The first one you show (Capital plastics 451) is my current favorite. I have the black version of that holder all filled in. I am really having trouble getting good photos of it, though.

You have some great holders and some great coins. Many of those are pricey in condition worthy of a type set.

Thanks for sharing. The 20th Century Type Set has been my favorite collecting area so far. What a cool holder.

Great holders. I have the 490 holder in a beautiful red color. At one point many years ago had it complete in AU/MS condition but the coins havesince moved around. The one drawback to the holder is it won't fit in a safe deposit box and where I live I don't think I would hang it on the wall. Too tempting for the wrong person.

Updated photo of the type set holder in a picture frame. Only five holes left to plug, the Mercury and Roosevelt dimes, the Franklin half, the bicentennial Kennedy half and the bicentennial Ike dollar. The first three I can get at melt value and the last two I will get out of circulation. I added the Barber half last week and at a local coin show this weekend I obtained the Liberty nickel, the wartime Jefferson nickel, the Barber dime and quarter, the Walking Liberty half and the Peace dollar. The dealer I got the Peace dollar from said I should have it dipped and it will look much better than it does now. I don't like to dip coins and in hand it looks a lot better than it appears in the picture so it's not getting dipped.

It could be done but it would be have to be custom made since the openings for the slabs of the different TPGs are not uniform in shape unless of course you only have coins from just one of the grading services. And, yes, it would be huge if you were to put all of the major types of the 20th century in it.

Do they still make the 490? I cannot find it on the Capital Plastics website.

I believe the #490 was taken out of production about 1979/80 when the Susan B. Anthony dollar came out and the updated #460-B holder was their big 20th century type set holder but I could be wrong on that. The #490 holder hasn't been in production for quite some time though. I would like to obtain another of each of the #460 (it's not the same as the #460-B), #490 and #451-N in white, blue or red and a second one made for Bowers and Ruddy Galleries. I have two of the #460-B now. I'd like to have two of each so that when displayed I can show both the obverse and reverse of the coins in the different holders.

Thanks for the information Gyrene7483. I don't imagine being that old, it would be easy to locate one?
