1959 to date, no "S" mintmarked proofs, all large/small date varieties, all 1982 varieties, & and all 2009 varieties.

How hard is if for a numimatic to assembly a Unc Red set from circulation?

I just searched $50 in and have previously searched $100 in the last several months.

I am not that close to completing the set. My grading standards of the zincs from 1983 is MS64 or better.

Anybody else notice the same?

I see the '59 to '64 in Unc once in a while and the '74 to '82 less often. Zincs in Unc are seen once in a while but they are usually spotted. Most of the set is seen in "slider" Unc defined as coins that are very lightly worn and still look nice. The only tough coins in slider are the '65 to '74 coins and especially the lower mintages of these dates.

I'd be pretty impressed to see such a set in the highest obtainable grade. I do this with the dimes and quarters but haven't been able to upgrade a single coin in nearly three years now.

My set is complete from circulation except for 70s small date ( don't have one ) 73 s ( have one but it isn't BU Red) and a 60 small date ( have one but is not BU red) otherwise I have a 59 - current set from rolls....mind you it has taken me about $1100 face to get there. Darn 70s small date......my huckleberry!

This is remarkable. I wouldn'ty have thought it was possible.

Are there many gems in your set or very choice coins?

I have just put together a 59-2010 set. I am guessing I went through $200-300 dollars worth of cents. It is no where near unc or all red. Very impressive!

I agree with cladking.

You might be able to find most of the coins in circulation, but the quality is going to stink. I don't think I've found any upgrades to main collection for a couple of years now. I have for the roll set collection though...but even that is pretty much maxed out. Now I have 2 large gallon ziplocks with BU's that I can't bring myself to discard.

Unless you get boxes from both coasts, it will be difficult to complete a set any kind of high quality. The branch mints (especially S) are very scarce in red here. When I do get lucky and hit one, it usually is ugly.

Due to all the people searching rolls and stuff from friends, relatives, neighbors, I would think it is getting to late. Possibly if someone started now and went through a few million pennies, might be able to do this. Possibly would be much easier to just buy such a set from a dealer. Yes a bit costly, but much easier on your eyes.

Perhaps the discrepancy is mostly a grading issue. There are a lot of very lightly worn cents so a nice high grade AU set should be obtainable with the "easy dates" in true Unc and many of the others still red and attractive but with the luster broken. This break in the luster starts on the high points of the design and causes them to appear grey relative the rest of the surface.

A lot of dates like the '73-S I haven't seen even in nice AU for decades. Back in those days cents actually circulated and not many were saved in Unc. The AU's are mostly coins that sat in jars and piggy banks for a long time but very few of these are left after all these years.

It does sounds interesting. And I do see a few AU/BU older cents in my change once in while. But for me my eyes are not that good anymore, to do roll searching.

For me I try to keep up good relationships with local coin dealers. Many times they will sell me their suplus mint and proof sets at or a little about face. But even in the mint sets it is getting harder to find high grade coins.

I found my 1959-Present MS set from the wild. The only ones I didn't find in the wild are the 1960SD, 1968S 1970SD, 2009P LP4. So not bad. I'm missing 4 coins. I would say they are all at least MS63. It can be done just be patient.
