Hello,

In 1970 were issued 4 types of Roosevelt dimes:

1970 without mint
1970-D (Denver)
1970-S (SanFrancisco)
1970 'NO S' Proof - coin error

How can I recognize the 1970 "NO S" Proof from the 1970 without mint?

chapter 2

I have a Roosevelt dime 1970-D, and on the back instead of writing: E PLU RIB USU NUM
my dime is completely missing the 'U' and the result is: E PLU RIB SU NUM...........Is it a kind of coin error?

Looking forward to hear from you.

Thank's in advance.

Best regards

Giovanni

I am not sure about your first question as I do not collect proofs. But your second coin sounds like a Grease Filled Die. There is no way to be positive without out pictures though. Grease Filled Dies are only worth a premium if a large part of the design is missing. Yours sounds minor and only worth face value. If you collect Dimes and it is in great condition I would keep it. These are all assumptions without seeing the coin.

BTW to the forum!

as far as the proof is concerned I dont think you will be coming across any of those but it will definitely appear to have a mirror type finish on it and the rim will be thicker possibly but it all depends on if it has been circulated at all....as far as your other question I would say it is probably a greased die...pretty common...but pictures would help a lot

The question has pretty much already been answered, but I will reiterate.

Any proof coin from that year will have a very obvious mirror finish. The proofs found are generally not cameo proofs, but the fields should exhibit this mirror finish more than the devices by a little bit. Even high grade uncirculated business strikes look completely different. Also, the proof coins missing an 'S' were an extremely rare variety due to mint error. None of us have one so I doubt one made its way over to Italy.

Might as well also look for the 68,71,75,83 and 90 No S's
while proof set hunting.
The big one would be the 75 (only a couple known) then the 68 next.

About the proof - I would research the flames on the torch, the proof is different than the general circulation strike. That information is in the strike it rich 3rd edition, page 179. There are no known values at this point, there may be many more of these than anyone expected there to be in circulation but this is a valid error coin. I have 1 - the 1970d. I believe I had posted a pic of this a few months back.
