I have very little experience with Newfoundland cents. 1944 is a bit of a tough date so I thought this one was worth looking into a bit. It has an odd lustre about it. I think it is original but I am not sure. The fields are pretty nice although there are some obvious signs of wear. Thanks for any views!

Without the coin in hand, it looks like it had been cleaned, some time ago, to me. NFLD coins, for some reason, are prone to acquiring a weird toning colour the minute you try to mess around with them. That purplish tone around the date is a dead giveaway to me.

Thanks for the thoughts. It is a tricky one.

I am not really sure if it is cleaned...it may be but you do wonder why someone would have bothered to clean a modernish coin in decent shape. It came from a set where none of the others were cleaned or lustrous. I am nearly ready to send a bunch off coins off to ICCS for grading....I will probably use this among others to round my lot up to 100 coins to get the price break. I ask them to reject anything that they would label as cleaned.

This is a case where the grade certificate will be important I think. If I tried to ebay this as is I bet I get under $5. But if ICCS actually thought it was AU or even EF it would more than pay the $6.50 I think.

I see nothing on that coin that would even qualify it as VF. Look at the small cents here:

To get an idea of how much detail (hair, ear, small jewels in band of crown, etc...) is missing from your coin.

In the Newfoundland coin series a really choice 1944 cent is virtually impossible to obtain. Even pleasing ef au coins are seldom encountered. Finest I have ever seen upclose is a pleasing MS62RB. Underrated is what comes to mind.

I have a nice 1944 PCGS MS-62 brown, with the 'Map' (mortar set) variety. Took me a long time to hunt that one down...
