Hello, I just won this item on an ebay Auction. It is a raw 1836 Capped Bust quarter that I intend to include in a Dansco 7070 album. 17 coins to go for the set! I find the Capped Bust design in general to be attractive. How would you grade this coin? I paid $82 for it on ebay (with a 14 day return possibility). It looks like it may have been cleaned. Did I get a good or a bad deal? Thanks for your input.

Unfortunately, yes. Way over dipped.

BUT, Capped Bust and Seated Liberty are truly hard to find in ANY grade...that have not been messed with in some way.

This one though, is a bit to clean and off color.

Does this fit with the rest of your type coins you currently have? Was the cleaning/dipping disclosed in the auction?

I'm not sure if it will fit in well with the rest of the coins, and I am considering returning it. I looked for some time on ebay and could not find any problem free Capped Bust quarters at a reasonable price, so I thought this might be a good compromise (it does have some decent details.)
As far as the 7070 set goes, I have been buying the best coins that I can afford, including an EF Seated dollar, gem proof mercury, and an uncirculated standing liberty. I purchased the following similar coin last week off ebay.

Yeah for me the Capped Bust quarter is proving to be one of the hardest slots to fill in my 7070. They are fairly difficult to find in the first place and many of the ones that you do find are cleaned/dipped or damaged in some way. I think $80 is a little high and if I was in your position I return it if possible, and then try to find one that isn't cleaned/dipped. You might have to up your budget a little to get a decent original piece.

I bought a cleaned Capped Bust quarter a few years ago when I was starting out and now am in the process of upgrading my earlier mistakes in my type set.

The coin does look cleaned and/or polished with Fine Details. The "problems" would take the value down into the Good condition range (to me anyway). Based on the images provided I would value your coin at $70 retail.

I think you did okay at the $82 price and would not return it unless the seller somehow mis-represented the coin.
