Picked up this lovely off the Bay. Yes, it's a problem coin; however, the oldest coin in my entire collection is 1883, and the price was right for my budget. If nothing else, she's a hole filler for a collection I may have the money to actually complete in mid-grades someday.

Hey,-Look-What-I-Got!-Bragging-Time!

In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions for the corrosion? i.e. a way to retard, stop, or reverse it a little?

Beauty! Your collection's time span has increased a good percentage and you are back in a time where the country was being torn apart by major disagreement....great acquisition.

As far as treating a coin, I have no ideas and am interested in what others might have to say.

A long soak in olive oil might make it look a little better.

Nooooo, do NOT soak it in olive oil. Olive oil is an acid, albeit a mild one. You would just be eating away the surface of the coin down to a level lower than the corrosion. Long soakings in olive oil remove a lot more of the surface than people realize.

Thats a nice coin even with the corrosion. You will lose too much detail doing the olive oil thing. If anything, get some Verdis care and treat it with that.

I think your stuck with it as is, a coin with character.
Veri-care may stop the progression of the corrosion.

Yeah, I like the level of detail that's visible even with the corrosion. I would like to retard the damage to prevent it from getting any worse, so I may look into VerdiCare.

@upstate: I love "coins with character!" My concern is to keep it from going from a "coin with character" to "useless hunk of metal."

If you want to stop futher corrosion and reduce the look of the corrosion that's there already. than stick the coin in your oven at 400 for a few minutes. It works good on surface corroded coins as long as the corrosion hasn't eaten into the coin.

Thanks, Raymo! I'm starting to feel like an IHC rescue service . . . I still see beauty in these coins when they're damaged. Every single IHC I own has something going on with it.

Thank you also Earle! Looks like we posted at the same time.

Not exactly sure what baking the coin would accomplish.

I doubt that whatever caused the corrosion is corroding it still. That usually is related to being in contact with something. Dirt, a liquid, corrosive atmosphere, that kind of thing. Soaking it in water pat dry then acetone dip followed by the VerdiCare would cover most bases without harming the coin. I have several in my IHP collection that are corroded as well, including my 77. Like I said, thats a nice coin regardless. It will hold the spot well until you choose to upgrade.

Yup, and even though they're worth less monetarily I like the coins with stories behind 'em. Who knows . . . . looking like this, maybe this coin spent some time in the pocket of an encamped Union soldier or was kept as a keepsake by half of a pair of siblings who had to fight across the North-South line. The possibilities are endless.

Use the olive oil at your own risk. Here is an IHC that I found roll searching that I used olive oil on https://goccf.com/t/127837
