So I have searched posts/ forums to find info on this coin but really couldn't find this same coin. I have a Martin Van Buren dollar coin. What makes it unique is the silver face and silver color Statue of Liberty. On top of that is the plastic/resin type coating on each side. Yes it's like a clear coat of some sort. The coin therefore had this smooth feel to it. Really interesting. If not from mint, then really a professional job. Is this coin rare or "damaged". Got it as change from my favorite coin shop as the owner will sometimes give change in interesting ways. Any info will help- thanks

It looks like you posted the front (obverse) of the coin twice. Do you have a picture of the back (reverse)? I don't know about the plastic/resin coating, but there are companies that sell partially silver plated "two-tone" versions of the presidential coins, as in the following example from Collector's Corner USA: 2007 Presidential dollar 2-Tone Gold Set Regardless of what these companies charge, however, the coins have no extra value to collectors as a result of the plating. In fact, many collectors would value them less as a result.

Not rare, and not an error. It's PMD, something got on the coin after it had been in circulation.

The Danburry Mint sells these coins at an extremely high price. My dad has a set of them (before I could explain to him he was getting ripped off). It is actually plated in 24k gold with platinum accents with a plastic covering like they use on bar tops.

Williamsonj320 Thanks for the information.
I have never seen a coin like that but I'd keep it if I was handed one. My husband got a HSN gold-plated quarter in change and we're keeping it. It's not part of the 'real' collection, but we keep it just like we keep the occasional foreign coin that comes our way. We keep them because they're different.

Awesome - thanks for all the info. I was going crazy trying to research the specifics. So sure enough the Danbury Mint offers these. Thanks again for that lead. Though not rare - as mentioned Danbury offers these for 19 plus dollars per coin. The fact that it does have gold and platinum is cool to me though I know that it does not add to any real value other than cool factor. I would say they are worth more than face value IMO. Sorry about pic. Did try to show reverse but had probs. just imagine a platinum faced president. Well I got the info I needed and in a pretty impressive time frame so thanks again community members!

Yeah, lots of private companies will take regular coins and "prettify" them with paint, and then sell them at an outrageous markup.
Since you're defacing the coin that way, it destroys any numismatic value. The only they'd be worth more than face value is if someone would want to spend more than a dollar for a painted coin. Since the Danbury Mint offers this sort of thing, obviously there are people who do.

Ya good point Jpsned. I have mixed feelings on paint. Usually don't care for it but have seen some exceptions. This pres coin in fact is not that bad but again I generally don't collect the enameled or plated. I was going to offer this up as a throw-in etc but just might keep this one for novelty sake. Thanks again all , and I think I just found I cool new forum/resource for info!

I wouldnt pay 3 dollars a coin or anything for it, but I actually think the Presidential dollars look better with the plating. I wish that was their real design

I have a George Washington dollar like that. It was in a roll of small dollar coins from my bank.

I think I'll hold on to it for awhile though technically I didn't even buy it. Don't think I would pay more than a dollar for it but I do like having it. Not a big fan of plating but it does have a cool look. For example that Washington is neat. With the plastic coating it does have a toy or non coin feel. Not something I associate with legal tender. Was low on money the other day and almost , almost used it . Wonder if the cashier would've second guessed it once they felt it. Which reminds me of perhaps a new topic for another post. Has anyone got desperate and used collector coins and currency at face value. I know- this needs a new topic post so rhetorical question.
