I picked this up on ebay a few months back. The seller's pictures showed what looked to be milk spots and I thought it might just possibly be a proof. I paid just over $300 for it, which is more than I would normally pay for a raw coin off ebay, but I figured an AU50 example is worth around $342 (according to numismedia.com) and so I decided to take a chance. Here are my pictures: I'm still thinking it is at least an AU50, but I don't know what effect the various nicks and scratches (bag marks?) have on the overall grade. Also, I don't know how the "milk spots" (or whatever they are) affect the grade. I'm hoping the spots aren't an indication of a harsh cleaning. So... what do you think?

After being told numerous times on this forum that my coin was cleaned I'm going to go out on a limb and say it looks cleaned.

Probably dipped at one time...still an attractive A-55 details coin...ENJOY!

Thanks. I got this specifically for my type album, so I'm not overly concerned about a past dipping as long as the details are sharp (which they are). I'm just hoping I didn't overpay too much for this one. A non-cleaned AU55 goes for around $422, so I'd be happy if this is, in fact, AU55.

I will say this: Your Barber looks very nice and has great detail. Better than any of my Barbers . By any chance does the coin look exactly as pictured? It looks like there is some green patina or verdigris on the obverse, possibly caused from extended contact with vinyl. This can be removed with Verdi-Care. Enjoy your coin(s). PS you take great pictures too.

No, that's just a reflection. I think I was wearing a green shirt when I took the picture. Quote: PS you take great pictures too. Thanks! It's amazing what you can do with a cheap digital camera (with a macro feature) as long as you use a lot of light.

Nice piece. Looks AU-55 and I'm going to guess details grade because it does appear to be cleaned, looking at these photos.

I don't see any hairlines that would give away a harsh cleaning. Might have been dipped but I would think this would slab as an AU-55

barryg, I did the same exact thing only it was on a shiny chrome Zippo lighter. Something else I collect, but was selling off one I didn't like. I was wearing a green t-shirt and this reflected on the lighter which made it appear to be green . If you'd of had on a red shirt, MS. Barber would have looked like she'd taken a beating .

Cleaned. Sorry. The obverse was definitely whizzed at some point, imho.

Whizzed? Why would you say that?

FWIW, here's another picture of the obverse with slightly different lighting and angle:

Yeah, definitely whizzed, it just has that "look". Lacks mint cartwheel luster, imho. The fact it was reflecting the color of your shirt is another hint that it's been whizzed. PL Barber halves are very, very rare. EDIT: Who was the seller?

Very nice! AU53, the amount of feather wear keeps it from AU55.

It's cleaned, it has been dipped, there is no evidence of harsh cleaning and it has obviously been whizzed. I love you guys, but sometimes you drive me crazy... Quote: Who was the seller? I don't recall, since it has been 3 or 4 months at this point. It wasn't anybody I recognized as a known scam artist, however (you know, the guys who are known for selling whizzed coins with altered photos to make the coins look nice). In fact, the seller's pictures (which I kept a copy of) weren't all that great in the first place, which is why I thought I might possibly have found a proof: But, yeah -- as I said up front, I really bought this for my type album and liked the amount of detail for the price.

I see no evidence of a prior harsh cleaning ... for sure not wizzed IMHO.
AU-something ... lovely coin.
