While looking through some President dollar I noticed a black smudge over the "D" in God on the edge. I rubbed it lightly with my gloved hand to see if it was just grease or something but it seems to be in the coin. Is this an error? My photos haven't turned out so great but I'll try and upload one soon.

Without seeing a photo, it'll be hard for me to tell what it is.

Getting a picture of the side of a coin is harder than I thought... Here's my best try though.

Are we not making up a reason for the presidential coin errors?
What I mean is, are we not once again "creating" this hype?

Hello, I have come across a few of the new dollars with black spots or apparently toned areas. All on the obverse of the coin. I sold a few on ebay and have one more now. I, like you thought that it might be grease or the like, but it is in the planchet evidently. I believe these planchets get burnished to make them shine. Possibly something in that process went wrong or there was some impure metal in the planchet that was able to rise to the surface.

These are probably what will eventually be seen as common planchet flaws. Likelihood of sustained value as an 'error' is very slim.
