Hi group, who has this coin and can you tell me the edge motto of your coin. The edge of this coin was highly worn so I can't see all edge letters clearly. What I can see is "DIOS PROTEGE ?BL ESTADO", they are Spanish, can you guess or tell me the missing letters after 'PROTEGE'?

Do you think this is a Christian motto?

Hello MathieuMa, thank you your sharing of coin. My original question is to ask about the edge letters, I want to know the 2 or 3 letters before the word "ESTADO" and I also want to know the meaning. But...

I have compared caustiouly your coin with mine. I have to admit that mine is a counterfeit. The edge minting is poor, it does not show any letters clear, not due to wearing but the counterfeiter was unable to make it good. There are also many inconsistency between two coins. I have kept this coin from 2008 and never have a look of it until recently. I will keep this coin as a teaching tool or I will liaise the responsible person of the auction house in HK for a refund if possible.

It reads : Dios proteges el estado
Which means : God protects the country

I found your coin suspect indeed, because of some details, of the patina, and of the rim which was damaged inconsistently to the two other sides ...
But I was not sure :)

Thank you MathieuMa for your information.

There are some question that want those pals who study history to answer.

Is "Dios proteges el estado" a motto of Christianity? I suppose it is! (Please also note that there is a cross on the Observe of the coin)

I wonder why South Peru was a state derived from the ancient Inca Empire and they paid their religious beliefs to Sun or other Gods rather than Christianity. But why there is a cross on the coin and a motto that likely to be a western religion than Inca? Do I interpret wrong? Henry

The spanish came there with as mission to give the holly words to those peoples - converting them to catholicism. There were many missionary from various catholic groups, in Peru the Jesuits were very active. Some ancient believes from the old Inca world were mixed together with catholic believes, which sometime give interesting things. But the place was clearly catholic when it became independent, with the spanish descendent having taken over the whole ancient believes. The cathedral and religious places were often build on ancient inca religious places for that purpose. Those believes were even punished, and pride for this history is coming back recently (the Inti Raymi celebrated in Cuzco each year is a good example).

So yes, this moto is related to christianity, but that's also the case on US money (In god we trust)
