I have a chance to trade 32 S Washington quarters.

Mine is a VF decent looking quarter, I bought years ago
For about a dollar.

I can trade for a AU that has a scratch on the reverse. I did not see the
Scratch the first time I looked at it, because it is small and I have to hold the coin just right to see the scratch. It is on the eagles left wing, for my eyes, I need a 5X power glass to see it. When I see a scratch like it has, I think of a staple hitting it when being taken out of a 2X2.

I can make the trade plus $20.00

I am usually against trading good coins for problem coins, but like mkman said, it's really up to you. If it will make you happy then go for it.

It really depends on your goals. If it is a damaged coin then it's probably net VF anyway. I have a toned 1932-S in MS-63 and I turned down a CAC 64 in trade because I liked the toning on my coin. The 64 was mostly white and you could argue either way about which coin is better to have long term. I'll take my chances on having coins I like.

So bottom line, ask yourself, which coin would you like... more?

I agree.

For me, eye appeal comes first. Technical grade is not a consideration.

JBuck,
I have the exact same opinion. I'll pick up a 'problem coin' that has eye appeal above a coin that doesn't that has no problems.

If it looks better, go for the trade!

I would like it if the scratch was minimal and the new coin had more eye appeal. But if that was the case, why would the seller want to trade? My only concern is that the 32-S Washington is a commonly counterfeited coin, the added mint mark was a favorite trick of many counterfeiters for years.

If it had more eye appeal, and I was certain it was authentic then I would definitely consider swapping.
