I have some kind of VAM coin with the 7th star and the missing R serif exactly as shown on VAMworld site. But It is missing the cap scratch and the denticle scratch on reverse denticles. So what could it be. VAM site says the star and serif on R IS the way to identify it so I am confused. Thks for any help

I've moved this to a place where it'll get closer attention.

You *are* talking about the 1878-P, right? When discussing VAMs, date is important.

Given all you've said, the only thing that makes me wonder is the lack of the denticle scratch on the reverse. It's not something I'd expect to go away even with circulation, as the plate coin at VAMworld indicates. The polishing marks referred to aren't imaged, so I can't really opine regarding them. If you're sure you have a match on the R, the 7th star and the spike under the eyelid, it's absolutely worth investigating further.

Have you the ability to post images of what you're looking at?

I've been doing a little digging. VAM-143 is a potential explanation; it has features similar. Is the "o" in "God" on the reverse open, or no? It's apparently true that the scratch in the denticles must be present for VAM-123.

VAM-80 looks like a potential distraction, as well.

Ah yes, thank you. I think it is a 143. That has all three features too I think. My coin has a goodsized sharp eyespike but there seems to be one on the 143 too. (Picture I saw is blurry) My bad then. I wish the vamworld description warned about the 143. I saw another guy on vamworld with the same issue as I recall.
Thanks again for the help!!

You're more than welcome. The research effort has been going on for almost 50 years, but given the millions of Morgans extant, it's still in its' infancy. We've only been codifying them online for about 7 years, and this is by a wide margin the largest work ever attempted in numismatics. So please be patient if sufficient information is not yet available; I'm quite sure neither of us will live to see it complete.
