I don't see anything about the coin that would make me think it's fake. The attribution is O-129, fairly easy attribution.

As mentioned the edge lettering was applied in a separate operation using a Castaining machine with two edge dies. One die says FIFTY CENTS OR and the other says HALF A DOLLAR with from one to three stars between the words. If the dies weren't cranked all the way back to their starting position, or if there was slippage during the lettering process the spacing between OR and HALF can vary or the words can even overlap. So the spacing on yours is not unusual.

I think the coin is real.
Rest in Peace

For authentication only purposes, I would go with ANACS...much faster, easier and cheaper. For highest potential resale value if the coin is problem free, PCGS is the best bet. I am by no means an expert on these. My initial instinct is that it is real...but I would certainly not lay down big money without TPG certification.

OK, thanks. I am going to make an offer on it and take the risk. That will be more fun anyways.

I will let you all know. If I end up getting it, I will post better pics, than I will send it to PCGS, and we will know for sure.

Thanks for all your help.

Oh, and a grade if it is real? Fine? VF?

To clarify, I'm with johnny54321. I would not lay down big money on this coin without major TPG certification. These are highly counterfeited by the Chinese. I too am no expert in these either. Just saying.
I don't want to hope the coin is real, I want the coin to be real.

"Oh, and a grade if it is real?"

I would say VG-10.
The main reason a coin like this, that's worth 4 figures, is not in a TPG holder is because there are problems with the coin ie scratches, cleaned, whizzed, repaired, tooled, plugged etc. Most likely the owner knows of these problems or has broken this coin out of a problem holder. JMO

Agreed - that's the main reason - but it's not like they're unknown, found still raw.

You're handling this like a boss, MisterMoney. You've taken all advice appropriately, and shown the right skepticism in all directions. Couldn't be more pleased. I don't know if you're going to end up a coin collector, but if you do, you've got the instinctive attitude and skillset to do it right.

Thanks. Gotta take risks sometimes right?

Im not sure it is worth 4 figure. Similar Graded ones on ebay are selling around 800 at auction. Lots of people asking 2k for em, but when they are actually put to auction, (No Reserve, Low starting bid) they seem to be getting around 6-900. Some in worse condition do even way less.

I had a friend bring in his Grading Book and I think you are right on with the VG-10. Its deff VG teritory, not Fine. Its all in the back of the hair which Is hard to see in those pics.

If it makes it into a problem-free slab, it belongs on Heritage, not ebay. There, VG-10 is a coin worth well over $1000.

You can see on the First Edge Shot, the OrHalf. Its almost as if they do overlap, or the little design overlaps the "r".

No, we can't, because the only way to view them is if we have a SkyDrive account.
