Matt, We'd need some larger pics to see if there is any flaws or marks. Try using a scanner as well if you have one. Might be able to see some more detail. Also there seems to be a small crack in the bell towards the bottom. -GO

Okay, Al and Matt, could you get larger pics? Hard to tell for those. I am not the best when it comes to halves, but I give it about a 62/63. I don't think they are full bands, but could be wrong. Like I said, if you can get bigger pics, that would help tremendously. Phoenix

Lol, atleast he is excited about it. Tell him it is a very nice Franklin half. How much did he pay for it, if you don't mind me asking? Phoenix

I don't know if it's a proof coin or a business strike. But for $6 it seems nice enough. I can't tell if there is wear on the cheek and sideburn area but the reverse side looks pretty decent, altho the rims there seem to indicate potential problems.

I don't know enough about grading coins. But it looks like some doubling in words 'half dollar'. Hey CCF experts...do you see what I see? mila_

I am not very good either but look at the pictures and comparing it with mine I would say 63/64 and It is hard for me to tell if it is a fbl looks liek there might be a small break right before the curve. but I would say that you made a good buy with this one. it is right in the price it should have been.

I just noticed the D mintmark - so not a proof at all. I wouldn't say doubling tho, it looks only like the lighting source is having an effect on the letters. I'd like to see more detail of the high points of the portait to even declare it uncirculated.

Hi Matt, and welcome to the forum! Your coin has strong luster and certainly looks BU. I see a flat area along Ben Franklin's temple which could be strike weakness, scuffing, or wear. If there's wear, the coin will only grade AU. If there is no wear, I'd agree with a MS63 or 64 grade. The bell lines are mostly strong but the lower set is slightly incomplete in the center. I don't think this coin will quite make an FBL designation. Still, it's an attractive half and you got it for a fair price. Are you planning to collect Franklin halves? It's a great set to work on!

I'd give it an MS-63 for your 1963.

I'd go for MS63 no FBL. FBL (full bell lines) refer to not only the actual bell lines, but if there is contact in important areas like the top of Franklin's head. But still, great buy!

Hi there,
I just registered and I want to express my opinion on the Franklin. I have the complete collection MS 60 or better, except for the 1950 - 1953 Proofs. (I lost interest in Franklins, and moved on to early coppers and Mercury dimes.)
In 1984 I paid 8 dollars for my own graded 1963-D, MS 63 FBL Franklin half dollar.
I consider myself to be a tough grader, but in comparing the photos to my MS 63s and MS 60s half dollars, I consider this to be an UNC for sure.
As others have stated, the scuff mark in the picture on the cheek, could be glare and angle of picture, but if those are really there this is a MS 60, non FBL. BUt it is still an UNC.
I noticed some cuts(bag marks)in the field on REV, which is just coming from bag jingling.
There looks to be a rim knick above the T in States on the REV.
If that is just glare on the OBV then this is a MS 63, non FBL.
Anyway, since you paid 6 bucks for it, I consider that a good buy for you. I paid 18 bucks for my 1949 MS 60 and the cheapest MS 60 is 5 bucks for my 1961 MS 60. I purchased most of my Franklins in the 1980s it looks lke.
Now, I am more of an expert on Mercuries, Early coppers, and Seated Liberty half dimes and dimes. Those are my interests currently.

I have done several sets of Franklins and would say that it is a firm MS64. I have a set of MS65 to MS68, and this is a very good looking coin.

Thanks for all the replies. I know NOTHING about coins, but Matt spends alot of time on the internet and reading books and he understands all the technical advice you've been giving.
I'm working on getting him more involved with the social aspect of forums instead of just the technical.
thanks again, I'll let hime post a follow up.
