Hello everyone, I'm looking forward to going through my family's coin collection and learning all about the coins. I'm a newbie but am diligently and voraciously reading everything I can about the coins. For grading purposes, I've been using PCGS's pictures as well as thecoinspot's pics, plus the value charts on PCGS. I'm reading everything I can-- seems like the more I learn, the more there is to learn. Down the rabbit hole! I would like to become adept at estimating the grades. Right now I'm working on a big bag of IHCs. Lots of work to do. Anyway, I would really appreciate your feedback on grading-- quality and color. I don't quite understand the criteria for RB and RD. Does this coin qualify as RB? I had the coin in a 2x2 and shot a few pics but soon removed it to get better shots. For this coin I included pics in the 2x2 because the color and luster more closely resembled what it looks like in real life. And away we go!

Amida-- I'm tickled that yours was the first reply. When browsing this forum for the last few days, I immediately noted your signature quote. Tom Robbins is one of my favorite authors :)

I see a slight amount of rub on the cheek, brow, ear and ribbon. So I'll say AU58.

AU-58 or MS -- WHO CARES? There is no adjective available to describe this coin. It is quite pretty. Very easy to sell: today, tomorrow, ten years from now. Or more. If you are of a mind to, ThisIsFun, hang on to this one. It will ALWAYS be an easy sale for you. It will never go down in value.

Quote: AU-58 or MS -- WHO CARES? It's a great-looking coin! I think TPGs get us to fret too much over grades. We enjoy the coin--not the Sheldon #.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'm sure we'll keep a few coins of each type, but my mother wants to sell and these are her coins... I'm helping her investigate what they might be worth so she can decide how to proceed. I suspect we'll end up keeping more of them that we thought we would. At least I hope so, I'm getting very attached, lol. I'm very glad she didn't take the bag of Indians to the local dealer and sell them in bulk for 50 cents each (we did sell a big tub of wheats, a tub of steels, and a ziplock bag of War Nickels though). I really appreciate grading thoughts on any of the coins I post-- it will help us make better decisions. I will be posting lots of pics in the grading forum, I hope that's OK. I'm trying to get familiar with grading/value for each type of coin. With the help of this forum and PCGS pictures I'm getting better every day, so thank you!! Over the years my brother and I have each taken (been given) random coins. I don't think anyone was really paying attention to what they might be worth, they've just been part of our lives forever and therefore taken for granted. After taking a half dozen shots of some of her Indians, I started going through my personal stash and taking pictures. I think it's time to make an inventory of my own coins and pay some attention to these lovelies. I may post a few that I like. Found a couple of interesting old Hawaiian dimes. I think they may be keepers, one for me, one for bro

I like the name you chose. It is a great coin and if you're really interested in keeping then, I agree that you should make an offer to your mother. You will have some great keepsakes to keep in your family and she is clearly willing to accept the value that a dealer places on the coins which is less ('cause he's running a business and that has costs)than you would pay to buy them. Maybe she'll let you make payments over a period of time... You got some really nice photos there. (Wish I could do the same!)

The challenge, as I see it, is this: If mom wants "out" of these coins offer to buy a few from her. "Mom, the folks on the CCF tell me that I should hang onto this coin. Can we work out an arrangement?" Then say, "What if I sell five or ten others? Can we work something out?" Moms, being moms, will give in if you approach them correctly. As her agent, she may just agree to you taking out your "fee" in a coin or three. The best of all possible outcomes, as we of the CCF guide you and help you to build a small but very nice set of coins that will ALWAYS be easy to sell. Just convince your mom that there is no need to rush into anything. You may never have the opportunity again to study a group of coins. But I suspect that you already know that!

If you sell them, you will someday regret it. Just sayin' I can tell you have a bit of the numismatic bug. I love IHC's and the one's you've been posting are top notch
