One of these days I want to get my hands on the JFK SMS sets to see, in hand, the difference in appearance of the halves from normal ones.

The JFK in the SMS looks very PL, far above any ordinary uncirculated JFK.

WARLE42, As DZ stated, the difference of the look in the SMS Kennedy's is pl and although not a true proof looking coin, it is very proof-like and amazing looking, the SMS Sets IF you are lucky show some Very Sweet Deep Cameo Coins Too, IF you are lucky!!!!

I hear all the time of people cracking sets...I'm wondering if in time realized population will drive proof and mint sets back up? But how would it be tracked, and by who?
There seem to be plenty of intact sets available from a variety dealers at the local coin show. I assume that once this selection dwindles, the prices will go up.

Thanks for the info on the SMS JFKs - one of these days I will get out to my local (30 miles) shop and get them.

I have literally broken and cut open hundreds of proof and mint sets all years. Usually for certain varieties, nice toning, high grades, etc. When its ogp it has to have the envelopes too although usually not to much of a big deal, retailers like the envelopes makes them easier to sell, same with the tv coin guys.

All of my Proof Sets from 1968 to present (also the '66-'67 SMS Sets) are in OGP, but my 1965 SMS and pre-1965 Proof Sets are in Capitol holders.

Just checked my SMS. Too bad both halves are cloudy. The quarters are PL. Got these 30 years ago and hadn't looked at them since.

I have an almost complete run from 56 to 94 including the SMS's in OGP including all the boxes and envelopes. I looked them over and they're in good shape. The only one I'm missing is 1960.

I got I little fed up with the government for issuing way to many variations/sets to keep up with so I sort of gave up on the whole proof set thing. Now I'm thinking that I may just fill in the set to complete it to date with just the basic, or most basic, set issued each year.

You saved a lot of money by stopping. They are far cheaper now compared to issue price. In many cases a little over dollar value of the coins in the holder. I'm sure you already know that. I have 1957-90 in proof and 1960-90 in mint. I gave up after that.

The reason why all my Proof Sets from 1992-2012 are Silver.

Two exceptions: A Clad 2009 Set I bought so I could have the Copper Proof Cents before the Silver Proof Set came out months later, and a 2006 Silver + Clad Set pair I bought on ebay for $1 above the melt value of the Silver Set alone!

I have a few dozens silver proof sets (both pre 65 and current).

I keep them all in OGP, as I believe it will be worth more someday, as many of these are being cracked.

Worse case, if I'm wrong, I can always break these when I'd like to sell .

I just don't feel right breaking open a mint set, even though I want the uncirculated coins for my albums. My solution: buy two sets - one to keep, and one to crack!
