These are my latest aquisitions. My mom inherited them and recently just found them. I told her what she had and she sold them to me for $75. That's all she wanted, I actually offered more. I got a 1956 Proof set, a 1963 Proof Set, a 1963 Denver Uncirculated Set, a 1963 Philadelphia Uncirculated Set, and a 1965 Special Mint Set. This was actually my 2nd 1956 proof set from the same person, as I received one from my mom's aunt who is whom my mom inherited these from. They must have purchased them early in 1956 because they both had the Type 1 Proof Franklin. I had the first one graded and it came back at PF66 this one looks a little nicer and has a hint of cameo. I don't plan to break them open right now though. Only 670,000 proof sets minted in 1956, and I really wonder how many are left in OGP. Anyways, here are some pics.

Wow...just plain wow. Thanks to MOM as well for sharing.
I do not know of anybody in my close or extended family that collects. My oldest brother did (he passed away). his daughter has his collection, but she does not want me to even look at it or help in trying to keep any damage from occurring.
My kids and grandkids WILL have several items handed down to them...BET on that.

These sets are really nice. And I really like the fact they are still in OGP. I am sentimental that way. But I wonder. What is a type I Franklin half? Is this only in proof? Is it worth more?

Those are very nice sets, congrats.
You raise an interesting question about how many of these sets remain in OGP. Are there any estimates out there regarding how many original sets remain?
I'd love to see a year by year estimate of the number of proof and mint sets that remain in their OGP. It's enough to make you wonder if the value of intact sets shouldn't maybe be higher than they are. The value appears to be based on the number produce, not the number that exist.

I Too collect everything I can in the OGP!! People did IMO more of this in years gone bye. Now a days I like seeing most collectors, not all, having their collections placed in slabs. It lends itself to people with the original sets, being the minority, having something special, JMO....Slabs are sweet, just not my cup of Tea!
I too would enjoy seeing the info on the survival rate of these almost extinct, OGP'D Proof/Mint sets........I do believe this info, IF available would be only based on the KNOWN sets, that is and would only be a guesstimate. Keep those sets in all the original packages!!!!!

I too would be interested to see how many have been cut up, unfortunately theres no way to really tell. There may be a way to guesstimate based on the number of high grade slabbed coins but by no means would that be set in stone.

I suppose we can't get anything too scientific regarding total intact Proof/Mint set survival rates but maybe we could do a forum wide poll of sorts to determine how many there are amongst the members here.
Maybe something along the lines of "I have x number of intact sets for the following years" and "Over time I've broken up X number of sets for the following years". If this could be set up to automatically tabulate the results, in a poll format, we would end up with an interesting snapshot of what percentage of sets survive for which years.
Let me know what you think. Being such a newbie I'm not sure how one would go about setting something like that up but if someone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

In response to the question regarding the Type 1 Proof, they only made up about 5% of the total mintage for the year. There are 4 feather tips on the eagle's left wing and the eagle generally has less definition than the type 2 coins. What's interesting on this second coin is that compared to my first type 1, this eagle has much more definition and sharpness to it. At first I thought it was a type two, but then counted the feather tips. I figure it must have been an early die state which is pretty cool.
I'm sure there are estimates as to how many proof sets survived in OGP, but I don't think there is any way to tell for sure. At this point, I don't have any intention of breaking these apart.

Almost everyone knows that I have no problem cracking a proof set. However, I do have five intact proof sets that will remain intact: 1969 Proof Set - my birth year and a gift from my wife's aunt. 1988, 1990, and 1991 Prestige Proof Sets - all gifts from my mother (bought direct from the mint). 2009 Silver Proof Set - I bought this one with the Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Set because I wanted an intact one as a 40th birthday gift to myself.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not shy about cracking open a proof/mint set. Right now I've got about a dozen mint sets in various states of being cut apart because I needed the nickels to complete my uncirculated set of Jeffersons.
I do however always have a twinge of remorse when I make that first cut into an intact set. Also I never do it if I don't have a intact duplicate in my collection.

I hear all the time of people cracking sets...I'm wondering if in time realized population will drive proof and mint sets back up? But how would it be tracked, and by who?...For now I'm not cracking any more....Well maybe a few nuts ,over the holidays :)

Nice sets - congrats!
One of these days I want to get my hands on the JFK SMS sets to see, in hand, the difference in appearance of the halves from normal ones.
