Several months ago I decided that I wouldn't spend any of my change in stores. Instead, I made a plan to break a dollar bill anytime change was needed to complete a purchase. I wanted to trick myself into saving money. Even if an item came to $1.01, I would break a bill in order to get the change. As a result, I have several coffee cans filled with pennies and one with nickels. These I'm keeping. But, best of all, I just rolled my dimes and quarters and I have $155.00 from that. I'm going to the coin shop tomorrow to pick up 4 silver eagles. "Here comes Santa Claus; here comes Santa Claus..."

Very good plan I pretty much do the same thing, putting my change in a jar .. when I find a coin I want to purchase I always use my spare change to offset the price.

Sure beats paying an 8.9% vig to a CoinStar machine!

Sounds great. Are you buying it for the coins value or just the silver.

I've used the same trick for decades and the cans of change have saved me in many a pinch. I'm glad to hear someone else is hoarding nickels and cents. I'm also hanging on to half dollars with the idea if the currency crisis I see on the horizon forces us to a barter economy, US coinage might find a natural value as a replacement for paper dollars. I'm thinking coins would be used as tokens with an agreed upon value set by the market. I know this might make me seem a tin foil hat wearer, but I'm a student of history and economics so that's where my paranoia runs.

My new years resolution is to open a new savings account and have the bank's roll over from debit card purchases roll into that for silver purchases.
Nice idea!

My father used to put quarters into a jug after poker, I think after 2-3 years he had enough to completely cover a vacations, it was insane!

I'm happy for the responses. When we were growing up poor, my mother saved pennies in coffee cans and it always felt great when we rolled the pennies and had money for extras. And I do recall it paying for a road trip to Atlantic City. That was a blast--two families, eight people, in a 1952 Pontiac sedan aiming for the shoreline, NYC to the New Jersey shore. Funny, I feel more secure with cans of pennies and nickels in the closet. I figure the politicians will cheapen the metal in nickels. My portfolio!! I collect Morgans for the love of the coins and for value. The silver eagles today will be for value alone; I saw silver double over the last few years and I figure it's going to happen again soon.

I do the same thing. Great to have a bunch of extra $$$ to put towards a big purchase.

If your getting it for the silver value then I would just get some generic silver bars or rounds. I mean, they have an extremely low premium, if any, and the ASE's have a sorta high premium. Anyway, that is just coming from a newbie.

That's a good way to save. I do that also. I also save all paper money denominations that have 3 or more of the same digit in a row ex: 888, 444 and any early notes that start with 00. I saved a few grand in about 8 months that way.

Wow, chris! So, I cashed in my dimes and quarters for $155 and went to the coin store. Picked up four silver eagles and a raw MS63 Mercury dime, 1943 D, FSB. It's been a good day. (My coin guy said he put away some MS64+ Morgans for me to look at. But I kept to my game plan today.)

Awesome idea Blackjack. I also put all of my pocket change in a mason jar. I have been keeping most of it in a safe. I am always afraid that I am going to cash in some awesome variety that I am not aware of yet because I am new to most US errors and such. I have probably 8 large butter containers, 6 mason jars, and some smaller containers or all nickels, dimes, and quarters. I have checked them all for silver, but I am always thinking "what if there is some good errors in there?" I have yet to just cash them in and buy some silver or other coins. Just my two sense
