History:

I ordered an 1852 O Seated Liberty half dollar from these folks on the 20th of November (No, it wasn't cheap...). The order shows up in "My Orders" under my account information on the website. I got an email back acknowledging the order (see below). My credit card has been charged.

I have received nothing. It's been almost 3 weeks.

I emailed Brian Cushing (who has taken over the Dick Osburn Coin store from Dick). His response is part of the email train below:

(Note: all my personal stuff has been changed or deleted. It was all there in the original email.)

Moe-145,

I'll be back in the office Thursday (the 6th of Dec). I haven't been in the office
since the Monday after Baltimore. I left for Thanksgiving early on
Tuesday December 20th and flew to Wisconsin (to pick up a collection)
and now Houston (Coin Show and time with Dick and Ruth Osburn) since
that time. I haven't had an office day since the 19th.

I'll send along tracking information Thursday.

Best,
Brian Cushing

I got no tracking information on Thursday as promised. I emailed again. I then called and got their message machine. I left a message on their voice mail.

I have received no further emails or a return to my voice message.

Advice on how to proceed? Patiently wait longer? Get pushy?

I would suggest you simply contact your credit card company tell them the problem and see if you can have the transaction cancelled. The signs you outline suggest that there may be some financial challenges for the company concerned. If that is the case keeping on contacting them may well prove frustrating. Given that its only been three weeks your credit card company can probably reverse the transaction.

I think they are a fairly good sized business and I think they have a pretty good rep. Probably with the last couple big shows and the Thanksgiving holiday week, I bet they have just fallen behind with their orders.

Probably. But an acknowledgement of my email or voice message would have been nice. And the tracking number communicated to me 3 days ago (as he said he would do...)

It makes me not care to do much more business with them...

Yeah, they could have at least let you know what the situation is.

Warning signs are present. They should've at least told you what the situation is, but have failed to do so. Are they so busy they can't find time to show you the minimal courtesy of keeping you informed? They may be backlogged, but then--- "excuses don't count--results do."

Canceling the credit card transaction strikes me as most prudent. If they'd like to kiss and make up later, they can do so when they get around to it. As long as they've got your money, their threshold of motivation is low (if not non-existent), and their behavior seems to be confirming that much so far. If I were you, I'd be dialing the credit card company's 800# right now.

I would have to agree with everyone else. If they cant be bothered to take a few minutes and give you information why should you be bothered to order from them. I would say to cancel the order unless you really love the coin or got a good/great deal

It looks to me that your contact Brian has been out of office since the day you had ordered the coin back on November 20th. He also stated he would be back in on Thursday December 6 after acquiring more coins on his road trip. If I was out of office for three weeks I may have seen backlogs of things and could also have had transportation issues on my trip. Still it seems you are being ignored (not a good way to do business) but I would expect conformation no later than Monday otherwise go with the rest and cancel payment.

I also think a note on the web site stating that he would be out of the office for an extended period of time would have nice, particularly if he's the ONLY one doing anything at the shop.

Secondly, the web site shows my coin "Processed". I would interpret that to mean, it's bought, packed and shipped. That's why I'm VERY interested in a tracking number! (I also realize the USPS is busy this time of year, too, so that may be a factor as well.)

For what its worth I havent had any problems with tracking numbers, it gets scanned in and the computer takes over. ebay glitches on it a bit and doesn't always work when you try and check there if thats where you got it, but if you go to the usps site with the number it almost always works.

I think they owed you a phone call like, immediately.
Customer service and satisfaction is everything when your running a business.
I would not deal with them again after this.

I would of felt the same way Moe if I didn't receive a coin I pay for after many days, and as you have mentioned that Brian should have conduct better business practice.

This is the weekend, so I think by Monday noon if customer service don't get back to you, I would leave them with another message to cancel the order. I would then call CC service toward the evening to process refunding your money.

You're stuck in a transaction where you're paying in more ways than one. Your joy in acquiring this coin is diminishing. I'd want to get out of this and steer clear of the company in the future. As suggested, give it until Monday; then act accordingly.

Your transaction has definitely fallen between the cracks and could have (should have) been handled better from the beginning. I know both Brian and Dick and see them at shows regularly. The business still seems robust. I am certain you are not being scammed, but being ignored or forgotten about is not fun, either.

UPDATE: Email received today:

Quote:
Moe145,

I sent a note through our order system last Thursday but apparently it didn't process correctly. Unfortunately with a busy travel schedule and limited inventory in hand at the show in Houston after Thanksgiving I returned to the office Thursday to process your order and found that this coin was sold at the summer ANA in August and not removed from the website. I apologize profusely for the amount of time it took to figure that out. I had trips to Boston (MA), Madison (WI) and Houston (TX) between your order and my first day in the office last week. We then had another coin show this weekend. I run the business alone, although Dick still travels to a few of the major shows during the year... and we do not have office staff, so when I'm out of the office there is no way for me to verify inventory until I'm back.

I asked in the note I tried to send last week if there was another Seated Half on the site you are interested in... I'm in the office all week so I'd be happy to verify we have it in hand and apply your credit to that coin... otherwise, I'll process a refund to your credit card... again, apologize for the inconvenience... and ask that you contact me before placing an order on the website so that I may verify we have the coin (and discount the price and apply free shipping as a way to help make this situation right).

Sorry Moe145. Please let me know what you'd like for me to do.

Best Regards,

Brian

Seems like he is being very honest. Mistakes happen it depends if you want to give him a second chance. Might be interesting to see what discount he is willing to give. It wouldn't hurt to look at his site to see if he has another Seated Liberty you like as much or more. I wouldn't settle for a lesser coin just to do it. If you don't find a coin now see if he would hold the discount open to you for a future deal.
