I have just started researching 1-2c coins, have noodled through 2c coins which I've detected and was surprised to see a 1968 which is apparently rare:

2c-Coins,-Out-Of-The-Ground

2c-Coins,-Out-Of-The-Ground

As you can see, because it came out of the ground it's corroded in places, there's a thin scratch left the queen's head, ending between the "e" and the "t". Can anyone comment on coppers in such condition and if it still has any meaning/value in this condition? Maybe it's not that rare, I don't know.

I have also found lots of 1967 2c coins, some good some not so good condition, worth getting excited about?

I'm yet to sift through my 1c coins.

The 1969 2c actually has a lower mintage and is harder to find in circulation IMO yet never demand the same prices as the 1968's. Having said that it is more common in mint state than 1968 because there were no 1968 mint sets.

They usually get $7-11. I would say yours is worth less than a dollar in its present state. I would be getting a cotton but and some olive oil and giving it a light rub to see how it comes up. It might be too encrusted to make a difference but worth a shot.

Thanks for the quick reply. Coppers corroded as such usually come up alright, I think the scratch will be more of an issue, but I guess they're not that rare. It's also frustrating for me that, olive/grapeseed oils never worked for me, they just darken the coin.

You only need a very little bit and a cotton bud. Be gentle. Once youre done acetone off the oil. It comes off and shouldnt look any darker.

i have salvaged a few coppers with olive oil, as for it darkening the coin, I have yet to find any evidence in the ones I have done that it does darken them, it does make the verdi go darker but not the coin in my experience. I also only use spanish olive oil.
